Sweden : PhD fellowship in resource recovery from electronic waste and design for End-of-Life

2 new research positions in innovative waste sorting and separation.
The Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark is seeking highly motivated candidates for two new positions within our environmental engineering and waste management research group: A PhD position and a post doc position, both on innovative waste sorting and separation with a special focus on electric and electronic waste, WEEE.

Find more information at the links below.

Please find the more detailed description for the PhD fellowship below.

The aim of the PhD project research is to contribute to:

• the understanding of waste flows in the end-of-life management chain for electric and electronic waste (WEEE), including the characterization of the key technologies for separation, dismantling, detection, sorting and recycling with their performance and requirements for waste properties.

• the development and testing of new pre-treatment processes, including use of automatic separation of WEEE products and components, light shredding processes, subsequent recognition and sorting for reuse or recycling, and by ensuring the compatibility between individual treatment stages in the chain.

• the identification of causes for losses of materials and energy in existing systems combined with exploration of new treatment concepts and the basis for elaborating general and product specific guidelines for a holistic optimisation of WEEE End-of-Life handling

• the design of principles both for electronics in general and for selected specific products, determined by the realization of new opportunities for dismantling and separation combined with principles of materials compatibility throughout the treatment chain.

The PhD fellow will work in the interdisciplinary research field of Environmental Engineering, Waste & Resource Management, Product Design and Life Cycle Assessment. The fellowship is part of the Research Work Package 1 of the INNOSORT program. Further, the fellowship will be established within the research training program ‘Energy and Environmentally Efficient Technologies’ at the Faculty of Engineering at University of Southern Denmark and also enrolled in the PhD research school called 3R, Residual Resources Research, see link below. Finally, the PhD fellow will have the opportunity to work closely together with the waste management PhD group at the Department for Processing and Recycling (IAR), RWTH Aachen University, as this group is a subcontractor to the University of Southern Denmark in the INNOSORT program. These multiple affiliations and networks of research will ensure a high degree of national and international co-operation with other researchers in the field.

The student will work at the Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology at the University of Southern Denmark. Professor Henrik Wenzel will be main supervisor and co-supervisors will be found among the partners of INNOSORT or other related projects. Close collaborative ties will be formed with the rest of the INNOSORT partners as well as TOPWASTE partners and the 3R member group. For further information on the position and conditions of employment please contact henrik.wenzel@kbm.sdu.dk.

Application, salary, etc.:

The PhD fellowship requires a M.Sc. degree in Environmental engineering or related disciplines or alternatively the completion of the first year of M.Sc. study with very high grades and/or other special academic merits.
The applicant should demonstrate research potential as reflected by for instance the grades obtained and the master’s thesis. Good knowledge on waste treatment technologies and waste management is desirable and some knowledge on Life Cycle Assessment and/or Material Flow Analysis is an advantage.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three or four years – expected to start around August 1st 2013. Earlier is possible. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 26 March 2012 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Program at the Universities (PhD executive order).
