Sweden : A PhD studentship in Theoretical Chemical Physics

A PhD studentship in Theoretical Chemical Physics: Computer Simulations and Quantum Chemistry of Solution Dynamics at the Department of Physics, Stockholm University. Reference number SU 402-0020-13. Deadline for applications: March 31, 2013.
Subject description
A detailed knowledge of ultra-fast dynamics in aqueous solutions is important for chemical processes ranging from fundamental physical chemistry to environmental and biochemical applications. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is one of many experimental probes for extracting structural and dynamical information in complex systems, and with paramagnetic nuclear spin relaxation, the environment around paramagnetic ions can be investigated in detail.

At Stockholm university, research groups from the Department of Physics and from the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry join in an effort to pursue theoretical studies of paramagnetic relaxation of lanthanide ions in aqueous solution and chelate complexes. This effort is part of a new FP7 – PEOPLE Marie Curie Initial Training Network "pNMR" aimed at the development and application of new NMR techniques, notably involving paramagnetic metal ions, for the analysis of structure and dynamics of a wide class of molecules and materials.
The Department of Physics is an internationally lively research environment, situated in the AlbaNova University Center and has about 180 employees, 250 undergraduate students and 80 PhD students. For more information about the department, see www.fysik.su.se.

Project description
We seek to recruit a candidate for a PhD position in the investigation of molecular dynamics in relation to nuclear spin relaxation of paramagnetic ions in solution. In the project you will both use state-of-the-art quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics programs and write your own source code for simulations of the nuclear spin relaxation from first principles.

The aim of the project is to develop theoretical methods for extracting reliable information on molecular dynamics and structure in solution from experimental measurements of nuclear and electron spin relaxation of paramagnetic ions. This is of principle interest for understanding chemical processes in solution but also of importance e.g. for medical applications.
The project is financed as part of a Marie-Curie initial training network on paramagnetic relaxation combining 9 academic research groups and 4 collaborating industrial companies through out Europe. The studies will involve frequent exchange with research partners in Italy and Slovakia, and applications of the theoretical models to experimental measurements in Italy. For more information on the different projects within the network we refer to the pNMR web-site: www.pnmr.eu.

Requirements
The possibility exists to register as a PhD student in either Physics OR Chemical Physics in the Department of Physics at Stockholm University. Physics students should have studied at least four years at a University and have the equivalent of a BSc in Physics. To register for a PhD in Chemical Physics requires either the equivalent of a BSc in Physics or in Chemistry. These studies must include advanced courses in physics/chemistry during one year and an advanced degree project (a detailed description of one in progress may suffice). We seek a candidate with analytical capacity and good English skills.

Applicants must have less than 4 years research experience (defined from the end of a first degree), and must NOT have resided or carried their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment. The pNMR network is committed to equal opportunities, and encourages applications from Minority Group Members and Women.

Terms of employment
A PhD education is four years (48 months). The 4-year PhD program includes at least 3 years of research and at most one year of course work. The position may be extended up to 1 year if up to 20 % teaching assistance or administration is included in the contract. The PhD fellowship is at approximately € 57 000 per year, including mobility allowance, for three years and is subject to the host country tax deductions. Depending on to which extent the applicant's prior education fulfils the course requirements, a fourth year is funded according to standard salaries for PhD students ("doktorandanställning") at the Department of Physics.

As with all projects within the pNMR network, the PhD studies will include a research secondment at other partner institutions (6 months in Italy and 3 months in Slovakia). Integral to the research-based training programme is the series of workshops, practical training courses, international conferences, and outreach actions, located at the different sites.

Information

Denmark : PhD Scholarship in Political Science at ICourts

Applications are invited for a PhD Scholarship in Political Science at ICourts - Centre of Excellence for International Courts, Faculty of Law and The Department of Political Science at The University of Copenhagen. Employment is to begin as soon as possible or on 1 August
2013 if possible. ICourts, the Danish National Research Foundation´s Centre of Excellence for International Courts, is a new research centre dedicated to the study of international courts, their role in a globalizing legal order and their impact on politics and society. To understand these crucial and contemporary interplays of law, politics and society, the centre hosts a set of integrated interdisciplinary research projects on the causes and consequences of the proliferation of international courts. See further at www.jura.ku. dk/icourts

ICourts is now recruiting a PhD student with a political science training within the area of international courts and legitimacy. We are particularly looking for exciting projects which can provide new empirical and theoretical insights into the causes and consequences of international adjudication on the national/societal level. One way of studying the legitimacy of international courts could thus be to try to find out whether the case law that comes out of the courts is in fact used as a source and reference point by national courts and governments. But also whether and to what degree litigants like ordinary citizens and private organizations/ cooperations actively use and refer to cases coming from the international level. The legitimacy of international courts can also be studied from other points of departure of course. It is however important to stress that research at iCourts is problem-driven and focused on salient empirical and theoretical issues with the goal of proving path-breaking basic scientific knowledge of the impact of international courts on politics and society. See further at www.jura.ku.dk/icourts/research

We are especially interested in research proposals that include quantitative research methodologies like those traditionally employed in sociology and political science. Research questions should address the development of a raising global order but prior knowledge of
international courts is not a precondition. We welcome applications from candidates within sociology and political science. Students with mixed law-politics background are obviously also welcome to apply as are lawyers well versed in political science methodologies.

Deadline: 15 April 2013

Sweden : PhD position in Geodynamic modeling

Geodynamics is the science of understanding and modeling physical processes occurring within the Earth. The model results are compared with geological and geophysical observations in order to improve our understanding of the dynamical system, to determine which processes and mechanisms are important in the Earth, and also to constrain relevant physical parameters. The geophysics group at Uppsala University has a long history of studying the Baltic Shield and the Caledonide mountain belt at its western boundary.Of particular interest are the thick sequences of nappes that characterize the Caledonides and which indicate horizontal transport over several hundreds of kilometers. Some of this transport may have been accommodated by underlying, mechanically soft, carbon-rich shales. However, it has been hypothesized that horizontal extrusion of hot, low-viscosity crust may have played the dominant role in this process. Further important clues about the Caledonian collision are provided by widespread observations of high-grade metamorphism in the basement beneath the thrust sheets, which suggest burial to depths greater than 150 km. Similar observations have been made in the presently active Himalayan orogen, and it has been proposed that the two orogens are dynamically analogous. The advantage of studying the Caledonian orogen is that the deeper crustal layers, which can only be imaged indirectly in the Himalayas, are exposed at the surface or are accessible via deep drilling (see http://www.sddp.se). Another scientific aspect is the relation of the remnants of the ancient Caledonian orogeny to the present-day topography and possible uplift throughout Norway. The great variability along the Scandes mountains in terms of elevation and degree and depth of isostatic compensation have long confounded scientists, and it is possible that the answer lies in the much older Caledonian tectonics.

Project description: The PhD candidate will perform research within the field of geodynamic modeling related to any (or a combination) of the above-mentioned research topics with focus on orogenic processes. It is of particular interest to model the Paleozoic Caledonide collision and couple the results to geological and geophysical data. Comparisons of the fossil Caledonide mountain belt with active mountain belts through modeling can be part of the research. Existing modeling codes may be used, but further algorithm development may also be required. The PhD candidate will work within a larger research program with other candidates and researchers from Sweden and abroad.

Qualifications: We are seeking a motivated candidate with a strong interest in research who has an academic magister/master- or engineering degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (formally, four years of university study including a minimum of 1 year at advanced level are required). Linux/Unix skills are necessary, experience in programming is desirable, and knowledge of software such as GMT, shell scripts and modeling codes is a merit. The successful applicant is expected to, and should be willing, to spend time in the field, as part of her/his PhD studies. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

The position is full-time for four years and may include up to 20% of research or teaching assistantship. A stipend may be paid out the first year and the following 3 years consist as a regular employee at the university. To be appointed as a PhD student it is required that the candidate has been admitted, or will be admitted, to a PhD education program, in which the ability to benefit from the PhD education is crucial. Uppsala University is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women to apply for positions.General regulations for PhD studies can be found in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap §§1-7 as well as in the university's rules and regulations http://regler.uu.se/.

Applications must include a CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and a personal letter describing yourself and your relevant experience (maximum 2 pages). Sweden : PhD position in Ecological Botany

Northern temperate and boreal peatlands constitute a major carbon store, and their carbon balance has implications for the current discussion on climate change. A large proportion of these peatlands are formed by, and dominated by Sphagnum (peat mosses). Their ability to create an environment that is wet, acid and anoxic is crucial for the development and maintenance of peatlands and for the storage of peat. Dominance is by some 20 species. Largely these are the same in Eurasia and N America, and therefore detailed knowledge of the species is applicable over the whole northern hemisphere. These species show niche differentiation along a few environmental gradients (pH, water level, light). The realized niches (patterns of occurrence in the field) are well described, but the fundamental niches representing the physiological tolerance of the species are well known only for few species.

In this project niche diversification is studied by transplant experiments covering large biogeographic, climatic and environmental ranges and including most of the dominant Sphagnum species and made with and without contact with congeneric competitors. Controlled laboratory experiments can be used for physiological tolerance measurements. In both field and laboratory experiments, responses can be growth measurements and also ecophysiological responses such as chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic capacity. To study how the niches have evolved and diversified the candidate will cooperate with our research partners at Duke University specializing in Sphagnum phylogeny. The candidate will link with on-going research on functional traits in Sphagnum in which growth and decomposition are key species components used to explain the ecological role of Sphagnum in the northern peatlands.

Candidates should have a master degree in ecology. Proficiency in English is a requirement. The candidate should have a keen interest in plant population and community ecology. Knowledge about peatlands, bryophytes and plant ecophysiology are considered as merits.

The applications should include a letter of motivation for PhD studies and for this topic, as well as a description of previous education, research interests and research experience. It should further include a CV, authorized copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, and contact information (phone, email) for at least two references. Relevant publications (including MSc thesis) should be enclosed.

The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The successful candidate will receive a postgraduate fellowship the first year (15500 SEK/month) and a postgraduate position year 2-4 (currently 24100-27500 SEK/month). The position can be combined with up to 20% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.
