Sweden : Post-doctoral Position in Bioinformatics for Ecological Genomics

Post-doctoral Position in Bioinformatics for Ecological Genomics at the Department of Zoology. Reference number SU FV-0851-13. Deadline for applications: April 8, 2013.
The Department of Zoology at Stockholm University consists of five divisions: ecology, ethology, functional zoomorphology and systematics & evolution. The advertised position will be part of the Division of Population Genetics, but within a cross-disciplinary research project in close collaboration with the other divisions and with other researchers, nationally and internationally. Presently the department accommodates 45–50 staff and about the same number of PhD students.

Subject
We are seeking a post-doc in bioinformatics for ecological genomics to work on ecological genomics and proteomics primarily in the research project”Insect life cycle genomics and adaptation in the wild”, with financial support from the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the Swedish Research Council. The project is an Ecological and Evolutionary Functional Genomics (EEFG) collaboration, bringing together researchers with expertise in population genetics, ecology, ethology, morphology, immunology and molecular genetics with the aim to attack fundamental biological questions regarding how genes interact to produce a whole organism with a life cycle that is adapted to local environmental conditions. The central idea of the project is to take on these difficult questions by means of an integrative, crossdisciplinary approach, with a close interaction between research on two insect systems: the green-veined white butterfly Pieris napi and the fruit fly Drosophila. The research group is an internationally recognized leader in butterfly ecological research, with long history of study on P. napi, The research collaboration also includes expertise on Drosophila as a model system. Our goal is to use genomic tools to study P. napi populations adapted to different ecological situations, and when we find genes that are candidates for being involved in such adaptation we will study their effects in the Drosophila system. We will initially target three phenotypes: diapause, wing pattern and immunity. We will make use of existing genomics and bioinformatics platforms at e.g. SciLifeLab for next generation sequencing, RNA-Seq and other high-throughput services. The advertised position will be focused upon the analysis of such data, involving direction interaction with the SciLifeLab and other genomic core facilities and bioinformatics centers. The holder of the position will also contribute to other related projects utilizing genomic tools in the department, such as Ekoklim (www.zoologi.su.se/ekoklim).

Specific bioinformatics projects include the sequencing and assembly of the P. napi genome, followed by extensive re-sequencing studies, and RNA-Seq (transcritpome assembly, annotation, and quantitiative gene expression) analyses. Given the abundance of data to be generated, there will be many opportunities for independent projects. Such work is strongly encouraged as a means of generating independent projects where the post-doc would be able to have a clear primary authorship role.

Qualification requirements
A suitable background is a PhD in bioinformatics, population genetics, ecological genetics, evolutionary biology or similar subjects, including experience of bioinformatics in connection with ecological or evolutionary genomics.

For a post-doctoral position the candidate must have received a PhD degree no more than three years prior to the application deadline, unless there are special circumstances such as illness, parental leave, union duties or similar. In the case of exceptionally well merited more senior applicants we will however also consider employment in another form.

Grounds for assessment
Applications will be judged particularly on the grounds of scientific rigorousness, empirical and theoretical experiences, and how well the applicant can be integrated in the planned project.

Well documented abilities to write scientific text in English is an important qualification.

STAR has a leading instrumentation group, with specific expertise in instrumentation for kinetic scale physics (microphysics) observations. STAR is in charge of a sounding rocket program that takes advantage of the research infrastructure in Svalbard (optics, radars, GNSS scintillations) to study plasma waves, instability processes and turbulence in the F-region cusp/polar cap ionosphere. STAR also contributes to magnetospheric and planetary missions.
We are searching for a physicist with a numerical modelling background, to calculate scintillations in GNSS signals due to in-situ observed F-region plasma irregularities by sounding rockets.

Project description
The STAR group developed a novel Langmuir probe system for the Investigation of Cusp Irregularities (ICI) series of rockets, to measure absolute electron densities down to meter scales. The instrument is miniaturized and will also be used on several cubesat missions to be in orbit in 2014-2015 (CubeSTAR and QB50).  The main goal of the current project is to verify that real time measurements of F-region plasma structure irregularities may lead to determinations of the resulting position uncertainties for the GNSS users on ground. The main part of the project will be to develop a software model to calculate the amplitude and phase fluctuations in the received radio signals on ground, based on the rocket observations of F-region irregularities. During the project period we will have two rocket flights to test the predictions from the model with GNSS ranging errors observed on ground.

Requirements
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or equivalent experience in a relevant area (e.g. radio science, scientific use of GNSS receiver systems, classical theoretical background on wave propagation in an inhomogeneous medium, experience in phase screen techniques, or other relevant experience). The candidate must have demonstrated strong programming skills for advanced data analysis and visualization techniques. A good command of English is required.

The successful candidate should write a brief description of how he/she will attack the specific project, and also document that she/he does have the necessary competence to successfully develop the actual model tool.
The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.  No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution. Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for post-doctoral fellowship positions.

Germany : Evidenced- Based Economics International Graduate Program 10 Doctoral Positions

Evidenced- Based Economics International Graduate Program 10 Doctoral Positions

Funded by the Elitenetzwerk Bayern, the International Graduate Program Evidenced- Based Economics offers 10 Doctoral Positions (TV-L E13/75% meaning ca. 1500 Euro net of taxes and social security dependent on personal circumstances) starting in October 2013.

WHO WE ARE: The faculty of the International Graduate Program Evidenced- Based Economics comprises members of the Economics Departments in Munich, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Wurzburg.
The newly established graduate program provides excellent research facilities, a variety of specifically designed PhD courses, and a wide-ranging international research network. Our faculty has extensive experience in structured graduate education and a strong academic
placement record. During the course phase of the program (the first two semesters) students will generally be based in Munich. Thereafter, students will be based at the principal advisor' s institution.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO: The research program of Evidence-Based Economics (EBE) aims to apply and further develop empirical methods in order to better understand the mechanisms that govern economic decision making and to properly evaluate the costs and benefits of policy interventions. Like evidence-based medicine, EBE is not content with mere speculation about the possible effects of an intervention, but -guided by sound theoretic modelling - seeks to generate clean evidence from randomized or natural experiments to identify the mechanisms that actually cause an effect. The need for the methodology of EBE arises in many areas, including public economics, labor economics, health economics, and development economics, but also within private firms and organizations where incentives provided by contractual and
institutional arrangements are crucial determinants of success.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: We aim to recruit excellent graduate students with a strong and credible interest in Evidence-Based Economics. Graduate students should be highly motivated and able to conduct independent research. The program is taught entirely in English.
Proficiency in German is not required. We expect knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics at an advanced Master's level. It is not our objective to provide such basic training. Therefore, the standard entry requirement is a completed Master's degree in economics. Exceptions from this rule are possible in special circumstances. In these cases, any missing graduate-level training will be specified in an individual supervision agreement, with suitable courses to be chosen from the participating Departments&# 39;
Economics Master programs. As a general rule, these courses have to be passed in the first semester of our graduate program.

WHERE YOU CAN LEARN MORE: For further details on the research and teaching program, the participating faculty, and the application procedure, please consult our website:
http://www.evidence-based-economics.de

Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2013. Under certain conditions, the admission committee can make an early admission decision.
Application Deadline : 30 April 2013
