Europe : 24 fully funded research studentships


As part of our ongoing investment in research, Middlesex University is pleased to announce the availability of a further 24 fully funded research studentships for 2013. Applications from well qualified candidates are invited in the following areas:

Art & Design
Business, Management & Economics
Health, Education & Sports Science
Law & Criminology
Media & Performing Arts

Science & Technology
Social Work & Social Policy

The bursaries are offered on a full-time basis to EU/UK and Overseas applicants and cover a maintenance award and fee payments (at the UK/EU rate). The Scholarships are for three years, subject to satisfactory progress. The level of the maintenance element of the Scholarships is linked to the level of corresponding awards made by UK research councils and is subject to regular review. Maintenance payments for 2012/13 are £15,590 per annum (including London weighting). The studentship bursaries are free of both tax and national insurance contributions.

In addition to work on the doctoral research project, successful applicants will be expected to contribute to associated activities within the School.

Eligibility
Applicants must have a minimum of a first or an upper second class honours degree or equivalent, and preferably a good masters degree, in a relevant area. If your first language is not English, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL 575 (paper-based) , 231 (computer-based) .

How to apply
Applicants should submit a completed application form and a CV (including the names of 2 academic referees) plus a personal statement explaining your interest in the project area you have chosen and any relevant experience or knowledge that you may have. The statement should be approx. 1,500 words in length.

Europe : One-year Master Program in Health Economics and Policy

Europe : Marie Curie Doctoral Fellowships

13 Doctoral Fellowships in 6 European Institutions collaborating in a new FP7-PEOPLE Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN): TECAS (Tissue Engineering Solution for Cardiovascular Surgery) www.mh-hannover.de/tecas-itn.html.
The TECAS-ITN integrates the major European investigators and experts in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with a view to establishing a European Doctoral Academy, which facilitates the cross-disciplinary and inter-sectorial training, and career development of Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the field.
TECAS-ITN is looking to recruit 13 ESR Fellows, with backgrounds ranging from physical sciences and engineering to life sciences and medicine, who will follow a cross-disciplinary and inter-sectorial research training programme in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Each ESR Fellow will perform an individual research project that is placed along the inter-sectorial innovation pipeline of a number of tissue engineering products and technologies, addressing the clinical needs of cardiac valve repair and replacement, myocardium reconstruction and patch graft angioplasty of the great blood vessels. The research training is supervised by a consortium of 5 academic/clinical, 2 industrial and 1 regulatory agency Partners with wide expertise in basic science, clinical research, translation and standardisation of tissue engineering technologies. Each Doctoral Fellowship covers a 3-year research position in the frame of a PhD degree. The training of the ESR Fellows will be complemented through project-specific Exchange secondments to other TECAS-ITN Partners collaborating on a specific Fellowship, Clinical secondments to tissue/organ banks of the clinical Partners, Industrial secondments to industrial Partners and Laboratory secondments to academic institutions outside the TECAS-ITN, as well as through an extensive curriculum of academic and transferable skills courses. The Fellowships are open to outstanding international candidates and provide a generous gross salary of €38,000 per annum plus research expenses, mobility and career development allowances, and full tuition fees.
Requirements: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physical Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences or Medicine.

Europe : Erasmus Mundus Master in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (MEEES)

Applications for Erasmus Mundus Master in Earthquake Engineering and/or Engineering Seismology (MEEES), approved and financially supported by the European Commission under the framework of the Erasmus Mundus programme, have opened, with a deadline of February 12, 2013. MEEES is organized by a consortium of European universities and research institutions, led by IUSS Pavia’s UME School (www.umeschool.it) and featuring the participation of the University of Patras (Greece), the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier (France), the Middle East Technical University (Turkey). USA,Europe,Australia : UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme in Ocean Affairs for Coastal Developing Countries

Brief description:
The UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme is funded by The Nippon Foundation of Japan and implemented by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DAOLOS), with the assistance of the Training and Fellowships Section of the United Nations Division for Economic and Social Affairs.
The main objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and training in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing coastal States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.
Host Institution(s):
Selected Fellows are to carry out specialized research and studies for a 6 month period at one of over 35 host universities or research institutions  in about 16 countries including Australia, France, Barbados, Brazil, USA, Spain, Canada, Ireland, Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, UK, Chile, The Netherlands, and Greece. After which, selected Fellows are to carry out their training for a period of 3 months at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations Secretariat (New York, U.S.A.) or at one of the following institutions:
    • • Fisheries Department, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Rome, Italy)
    • • International Labour Organization (Geneva, Switzerland)
    • • International Maritime Organization (London, U.K.)
    • • International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (Hamburg, Germany)
    • • United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP office to be confirmed according to Fellow’s research topic)
Field of studies:
Ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science.
Number of Awards:
Each year, the UN-Nippon Selection Committee will review applications and award Fellowships to 10 successful candidates.
Target group:
Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing coastal countries.  Previous fellows were from South America (Columbia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, etc.) ; Africa (Ghana, Cameroon, Mozambique, Tanzania, etc.); South Asia (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.); and Southeast Asia and Pacific (Philippines, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, etc.).
Scholarship value/inclusions:
Successful candidates will be provided with the opportunity to develop a research/study theme of direct relevance to their nation and/or region with respect to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, including in the marine sciences.
The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:
Phase One: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study – undertaken at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions and under the guidance of subject matter expert(s) who have recognized in-depth expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.
Phase Two: 3-month Research and Training – normally undertaken at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Eligibility:
Candidates must:
• You must be between ages 25 and 40;
• You must have successfully completed a first university degree, and demonstrate a capacity to undertake independent advanced academic research and study;
• You must be a mid-level administrator from a national government organ of a developing coastal State, or another government related agency in such a State, which deals directly with ocean affairs issues, and your professional position must allow you to directly assist your nation in the formulation and/or implementation of policy in this area. This includes marine sciences and the science-policy linkage. Your “Nomination and Recommendation Form” should be completed by a Government official who can attest to the nature of your work with respect to the Government’s ocean affairs and law of the sea related activities, and indicate how an Award would directly contribute to these activities; and
•  Your proposed research and study programme must contribute directly to your nation’s formulation and/or implementation of ocean affairs and law of the sea policies and programmes.

Europe : Erasmus Mundus Master in Theoretical Chemistry

It is open the call to apply for the scholarships to follow the Erasmus Mundus Master in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling. The studies can be following in one of the 7 Universities that are part of the program: Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain), University of Valencia (Spain), University of Groningen (Netherlands), University of Perugia (Italy), University of Porto (Portugal, University Paul Sabatier Toulouse III (France) and Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).

There are two types of scholarships:

Category A: for people who are not from one EU country or from one country of the European Economic Area. The applicant must comply the 12 month rule, have not spent more than 12 month in one EU country in the last five years. This scholarship covers the participation costs of the programme as well as provides a monthly allowance of 1000Eur and an amount for travel and installation expenses.

Category B: for people from one European country or for those who have carried out their main activity, at least, during 12 month in one EU country in the last five years. This scholarship covers the participation costs of the programme and provides a monthly allowance of 500.

Europe : European Master's Program in Computational Logic

Four leading European universities and a leading Australian partner institution have teamed up and developed a unique, integrated and distributed European Master's Program in Computational Logic (EMCL):

Its key features are:
  • It is a two year research-oriented master's program leading to a joint Master of Science (MSc) degree with English as language of instruction.
  • Tuition Fees:
    500/1500 EUR per semester for EU-/non-EU-students. Scholarships are available.
  • Study Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Mathematics or equivalent degree
    • Proof of adequate knowledge of English

FetalMed-PhD offers students a unique opportunity to achieve an internationally recognized joint PhD degree in the growing field of Fetal Medicine. The programme contemplates research projects spanning all scientific disciplines and all maturational stages relevant to fetal medicine, from early fetal life to childhood.
In addition, the programme will foster mobility between the three partner universities in Barcelona (Spain), Leuven (Belgium) and Lund (Sweden) and additional Associated Partners in industry and academia. Successful graduates will thus have a broad and practical training that will allow them to generate and apply solutions to Fetal Medicine that will bridge academic, research and industrial disciplines.
The three major research lines include (1) Prediction and prevention of fetal programming, (2) Cardiovascular diseases and (3) Fetal therapy and surgery.
The programme is addressed to professionals from different backgrounds in the fields of Clinical Medicine (obstetricians, radiologists, cardiologists), Basic Science (Biologists, biochemistry) and Technology (bio-engineers, physicists).
For the first edition, we have available 5 EMJD fellowships for non-EU nationals, 3 for EU-nationals and an additional 1 for West Balkans/Turkey, although there is also place for candidates who are not awarded a fellowship.
