We are now offering a PhD scholarship funded from the prestigious Australian Research Council
(ARC) Discovery Projects. The ARC Discovery project aims at developing a novel system for
automated human activity discovery and monitoring using low-cost, unobstrusive radio-frequency
identification (RFID) and sensor network technologies.

The PhD research will be performed under the supervision of A/Prof. Michael Sheng (http://www.cs.adelaide.edu.au/~qsheng) from School of Computer Science, with access to other
collaborating research teams in Australia and USA.

The stipend of the scholarship is $25,000 per annum (tax exempt) for 3 years, plus travel funds for attending conferences.

We are looking for a highly-motivated, dedicated candidate who meets the following requirements:-

An excellent Honors (1st class) or equivalent degree (Masters) in Computer Science or a
closely related field,
Very good programming and math skills,
Very good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing,
Experience within the fields of database, statistics, data mining, sensor networks/RFID, Web
services, are of advantage

Australia : Three PhD Scholarships: IBM-UTS Smarter Planet Project


At the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), you can challenge yourself by undertaking PhD studies in artificial intelligence. In this role, you will explore some of the deepest problems of intelligence yet see your work make a real difference in practical systems.

The IBM-UTS Smarter Planet Project is offering three scholarships to Australian or international candidates. The scholarship is paid as a tax-exempt $24,653 annual stipend to help cover your living expenses for a maximum of 3.5 years. Tuition fees for successful Australian candidates will be covered by the Research Training Scheme. International candidates may be eligible for an International Research Scholarship that covers tuition fees.

These scholarships will support PhD research projects that address real world problems using software, intelligent robots, and connected environmen ts. The objective of the IBM-UTS Smarter Planet Project is to develop novel approaches to constructing intelligent systems that engage seamlessly with users and enable new forms of social interaction. Projects may involve artificial intelligence, formal logic, computational law, cognitive science, data analytics, social computing, robotics and the internet of things.

A PhD is rewarding like no ordinary job. You will help create the future at the same time as developing your research skills and preparing you for the next phase of your career. You will work in the vibrant Innovation and Enterprise Research Laboratory (the "Magic Lab") with access to state-of-the- art technologies, including Australia' s only PR2 robot. The research environment is stimulating but relaxed and your colleagues will be highly motivated and skilled researchers. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with senior research leaders in IBM.

We are looking for motivated, resourceful and imaginative people to join us. Normally a Masters or high Honours degree in a relevant field of science, IT or engineering is required but in rare circumstances exceptional candidates without such qualifications are admitted. You do not need to have any specialized knowledge or experience but a high level of skill in software engineering is expected.

Australia : PhD Scholarship: Metabolomics of Climate Stress Responses in Drosophila.

The Position:
We are seeking a motivated post-graduate student to work on a project to understand the role of lipid metabolism in enabling species to adapt, or not, to climate change. The project will be based on Australian Drosophila species with differing abilities to adapt to laboratory induced climate stressors such as cold shock and desiccation.
The successful applicant will receive a full scholarship to undertake a three year PhD degree program in the Managing Species and Natural Ecosystems Theme of CSIRO’s Climate Adaptation Flagship. This student will be based at the laboratories of CSIRO’s Division of Ecosystems Sciences, Black Mountain, Canberra, ACT, and enrolled through The University of Melbourne.
The Scholarship is linked with “Genomic Basis of Adaptation to Climate Change” project funded by the Science and Industry Endowment Fund with funding also requested from the Agilent Technologies Foundation. For students of demonstrated high calibre, a top-up of the scholarship is available through CSIRO’s Division of Ecosystem Sciences.
Specifically you will:
  • Develop and apply methods for the analysis of lipids and conduct in depth analyses of the lipid metabolic pathways of the different fly species under climate stresses.
  • Have access to transcriptomic data collected from the flies under these stresses, which should help elucidate the genetic bases for the changes that occur in lipid metabolism during stress response.

Scholarship or Association?

There are two ways to join the College. Both will make you a full member - no matter where your funding comes from.

Option 1: Apply to become an Associate

If you already have your own funding and have started a PhD in a related discipline at either the University of Melbourne or one of the German partner universtities, this is the option for you. An Associate of the College has the same rights and responsibilities as someone who receives a scholarship. You will participate in our seminar and curriculum programs, as well as the international exchange (travel stipends can be provided).
Our selection criteria for Associates, in order, are: (1) your academic track record, (2) the relevance of your PhD topic to the College's research focus and (3) the suitability of any existing supervisors to the College's network.

Option 2: Apply for a College scholarship

Nine PhD scholarships are currently available: six for Australian students and three for international students.
  • Australian Student Scholarships:
    Australian students are eligible for a University of Melbourne scholarship of $24,567 per year (tax free) over three years, plus a travel stipend. The travel stipend will cover the cost of travel to Berlin for a period of six months during your PhD. While it is compulsory to spend six months in Berlin working with colleagues at the Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, this work can be done over two three month periods, three two month periods or one six month period - depending on research and other requirements.
  • International Student Scholarships:
    Students from countries outside Australia are encouraged to apply for the University of Melbourne International Scholarship worth approx. $25,000 per year (over 3.5 years). This special scholarship includes a fee waiver to the value of $30,000 per year over three years. University of Melbourne international PhD students will also be required to spend six months at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research or another German partner universities. Note that eligibility requirements are currently under review and will be announced on 1st of March 2013.

The application process

The application process is quite straightforward. Using the online application form, submit the following paperwork: your CV, a cover letter explaining why you want to join the College, a sample piece of your work (e.g. a former seminar paper) and your up-to-date academic transcript.
After reviewing the applications, we will invite potential PhD students to an interview. If accepted, you could start your PhD at any time before October 2013.
We will review and respond to any applications within three weeks of the 31 March, 2013 deadline.

Australia : International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) at University of Western Sydney

Australian Government funded International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) at University of Western Sydney in Australia. The students of overseas country, except New Zealand can apply for this scholarship. IPRS awards are offered for doctoral level and masters honours (research masters). The IPRS are awarded for the full cost of tuition and overseas student health cover. Applications will close on 16th August 2013.

Scholarship Description: International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are a tuition fee scholarship for full-time study University of Western Sydneytowards a higher degree by research. These prestigious scholarships are funded by the Australian Government. UWS supports IPRS awardees with a living allowance and overseas student health cover. Competition for scholarships is intense; only applicants with an excellent academic record and capacity to undertake research training in one of the University’s areas of research strength will be offered an award.

Duration of award(s): The tenure of both the award and the living allowance is three years for doctoral candidates and two years for Masters Honours (research masters) candidates.
What does it cover? The IPRS award provides for the full cost of tuition and overseas student health cover. The award may not provide for other fees charged by the University from time to time. UWS also provides a living allowance - A$24,653 per annum in 2013 - indexed annually and paid fortnightly.

Selection criteria: Eligible applicants will: -have an academic record at least equivalent to an Australian 1st Class Bachelor Honours degree. This is a four year degree with a major research project in the final year, with a score of at least 80 per cent.

Notification: Scholarships are awarded in October and successful applicants should commence their course and scholarship in the Autumn session of the following year -March.
How to Apply: Step 1: Contact an academic advisor: Application must include evidence that a suitable supervisor is available to supervise the applicant’s proposed project in a UWS Research Centre or Research Groups. An academic advisor is available in each Research Centre or Group to discuss student’s admission and assist him/her to identify a suitable supervisor.
Step 2: Submit an application form: The Application Form will be available at a later date.
All applicants are required to submit a research proposal and certified copies of their transcripts and certificates of completion. Applicants who have already applied for admission must still submit the IPRS application form.

Australia : University of Adelaide Fully-funded Scholarships for Outstanding International Students

Brief description:

The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study.  The purpose of Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI) is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its research effort.

•  An annual living allowance of approximately $23,728 (2012 value) for the normal duration of the program; and
•  If the award holder holds a subclass 574 visa the award covers the cost of compulsory standard Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Worldcare policy for the student and their spouse and dependents (if any) for the period of the scholarship. If the award holder does not hold a subclass 574 visa then he/she is responsible for the cost of health insurance.
Eligibility:
Applicants should hold at least the equivalent of an Australian First Class Honours degree. This is a four year degree with a major research project in the final year. Other criteria that will be taken into consideration is undergraduate performance, bachelor and honours awards and scholarships, other postgraduate degrees, publications in internationally refereed journals, the presentation of conference papers and relevant industry experience.
Applications for these scholarships are always highly competitive.  Generally ASI recipients have completed a Masters degree including a significant research component and have several publications and relevant work and research experience.

Australia : Melbourne University Scholarships for International Students

Brief description:
The Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. MIRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.

Australia Leadership Awards Fellowships are now Australia Awards Fellowships. The Australian Awards Fellowships are a component of a regional program that aims to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages with developing countries.  They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes.
ALA Fellowships are for short-term study, research, and professional attachment programs in Australia delivered by Australian organizations.

1. International applicants must be citizens and/or permanent residents of a participating country (see Section 4.3) and may not hold dual citizenship with Australia.

3. Applicants who have completed an Endeavour Award and/or AusAID Scholarship in the preceding 24 months (2 years) before the current round of the Endeavour Awards are not eligible to apply.
4. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree (minimum) at the time of application, demonstrating high academic achievement.
5. Applicants must have applied for and gained admission to a Masters or PhD course in Australia. Conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application. Please note that you will not be funded for Masters level study leading to a PhD – you must choose one, either Masters or PhD level study.

Australia : International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) at Australian Universities

and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependents.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for an IPRS, a student must:
(a) be an international student; and
(b) meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing; and
(c) be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a HDR at an eligible scholarship provider in Australia; and
(d) be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the provider as one of its areas of research concentration; and
(e) not hold a research qualification regarded by the provider to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree or, if undertaking a Research Masters degree, not hold a research qualification regarded by the provider to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters degree; and
(f) not have held an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS; and
(g) not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships are supplementary to the Australian Development Scholarships (ADS).
Only 200 ALA Scholarships are available globally on an annual basis. Therefore, selection for an ALA Scholarship is highly competitive. It is based on a candidate’s professional and personal qualities, academic achievement and, most importantly, their commitment to contribute to development outcomes for their country and region.
Awardees undertake a Leadership for Development Program which provides opportunities to enhance leadership capacity and extend networks while the Scholars are in Australia.

In addition to receiving the ADS entitlements, the selected ALA scholars will undertake a Leadership for Development Program while they are in Australia. The purpose of this Program is to enhance the ability and confidence of participating scholars to lead action on development reform in their own country.
ALA Scholars are provided with further opportunities and activities, beyond their postgraduate studies, to enhance their leadership knowledge and extend their networks through a national Leadership for Development Conference and other tailored activities.

Where English is not the first language, Posts must ensure that candidates for the supplementary ALA have achieved one of the following test results before recommending them to the Interdepartmental Selection Panel in Canberra (i.e. before 8 August), irrespective of whether the English language requirements for the course of study is lower:
a. an IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5 (with no band less than 6)
b. a TOEFL paper-based test score of at least 580
c. a TOEFL computer-based test score of at least 237

Selection for the prestigious Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is highly competitive. It is based on leadership qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, the potential for the candidate to influence development outcomes in their home country.

There is not a separate application form for the supplementary ALA. Applicants who are interested in being considered for the ALA should indicate their interest on the Scholarship Application Form for ADS. Alternatively, if the applicant receives an invitation to attend an interview, they may use that opportunity to indicate their interest in the ALA.

The Endeavour Executive Award provides professional development opportunities of (1-4 months) for high achievers in business, industry, education or government from participating countries and Australian’s to do the same.The Awards focus on building skills and knowledge through a host work environment rather than through formal enrolment in a study program at a host organisation and are not intended to fund direct academic research (if your activity will result in you receiving, or contributes to, a formal academic qualification, you will not be eligible to apply for an Executive Award).

If your activity will result in you receiving or contributes to a formal academic qualification, you will not be eligible to apply for an Executive Award.
6. International and Australian applicants must be nominated by their host organisation and include a completed nomination form for commencement in 2013 with their application.
Selection Criteria
- A record of good academic achievement and a minimum of five years full-time or equivalent relevant work experience are highly desirable. Preference may be given to applicants with work experience that is directly related to their proposed activity;
- A proposal that shows how you will enhance your vocational skills and stay informed of new developments relevant to your existing skills and interests of your home country;
- The applicant’s potential to participate fully in their profession or the wider community on their return home demonstrating how the activity will build and extend on the applicant’s leadership capabilities;
- The potential for ongoing links between the host and home organisations, and
- Evidence of participation in community service outside of the applicant’s regular studies and/or employment duties.
