Australia : Australian-German College of Climate and Energy Transitions

Exciting scholarship opportunities are now available for Australian and international graduates.
Keep reading to find out more, then proceed to the application form.

Scholarship or Association?

There are two ways to join the College. Both will make you a full member - no matter where your funding comes from.

Option 1: Apply to become an Associate

If you already have your own funding and have started a PhD in a related discipline at either the University of Melbourne or one of the German partner universtities, this is the option for you. An Associate of the College has the same rights and responsibilities as someone who receives a scholarship. You will participate in our seminar and curriculum programs, as well as the international exchange (travel stipends can be provided).
Our selection criteria for Associates, in order, are: (1) your academic track record, (2) the relevance of your PhD topic to the College's research focus and (3) the suitability of any existing supervisors to the College's network.

Option 2: Apply for a College scholarship

Nine PhD scholarships are currently available: six for Australian students and three for international students.
  • Australian Student Scholarships:
Australian students are eligible for a University of Melbourne scholarship of $24,567 per year (tax free) over three years, plus a travel stipend. The travel stipend will cover the cost of travel to Berlin for a period of six months during your PhD. While it is compulsory to spend six months in Berlin working with colleagues at the Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, this work can be done over two three month periods, three two month periods or one six month period - depending on research and other requirements.
  • International Student Scholarships:
Students from countries outside Australia are encouraged to apply for the University of Melbourne International Scholarship worth approx. $25,000 per year (over 3.5 years). This special scholarship includes a fee waiver to the value of $30,000 per year over three years. University of Melbourne international PhD students will also be required to spend six months at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research or another German partner universities. Note that eligibility requirements are currently under review and will be announced on 1st of March 2013.

PhD topics

Available PhD projects are listed on this webpage and will be updated regularly. If one of these projects interests you, please contact the relevant supervisor for more information.
We also strongly encourage you to pursue an original idea - provided it falls within the College's overall research focus, you will be most welcome.

IMPORTANT: Contact potential supervisors

Your supervisors are the most important mentors during your PhD, so you should contact them as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please do contact any of the supervisors listed on this website. While no interview is required before you submit your application, to be accepted as an Associate or scholarship student you must discuss your project directly with your potential supervisor.

Application Deadline for Scholarships: 31 March, 2013

Your can apply to be an Associate any time. If you are applying for a scholasrhip, the deadline is 31 March, 2013. Please note there will be more opportunities in the future, including those based in Germany (with the six month research visit in Australia).

The application process

The application process is quite straightforward. Using the online application form, submit the following paperwork: your CV, a cover letter explaining why you want to join the College, a sample piece of your work (e.g. a former seminar paper) and your up-to-date academic transcript.
After reviewing the applications, we will invite potential PhD students to an interview. If accepted, you could start your PhD at any time before October 2013.
We will review and respond to any applications within three weeks of the 31 March, 2013 deadline.
