Germany : Evidenced- Based Economics International Graduate Program 10 Doctoral Positions

Evidenced- Based Economics International Graduate Program 10 Doctoral Positions

Funded by the Elitenetzwerk Bayern, the International Graduate Program Evidenced- Based Economics offers 10 Doctoral Positions (TV-L E13/75% meaning ca. 1500 Euro net of taxes and social security dependent on personal circumstances) starting in October 2013.

WHO WE ARE: The faculty of the International Graduate Program Evidenced- Based Economics comprises members of the Economics Departments in Munich, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Wurzburg.
The newly established graduate program provides excellent research facilities, a variety of specifically designed PhD courses, and a wide-ranging international research network. Our faculty has extensive experience in structured graduate education and a strong academic
placement record. During the course phase of the program (the first two semesters) students will generally be based in Munich. Thereafter, students will be based at the principal advisor' s institution.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO: The research program of Evidence-Based Economics (EBE) aims to apply and further develop empirical methods in order to better understand the mechanisms that govern economic decision making and to properly evaluate the costs and benefits of policy interventions. Like evidence-based medicine, EBE is not content with mere speculation about the possible effects of an intervention, but -guided by sound theoretic modelling - seeks to generate clean evidence from randomized or natural experiments to identify the mechanisms that actually cause an effect. The need for the methodology of EBE arises in many areas, including public economics, labor economics, health economics, and development economics, but also within private firms and organizations where incentives provided by contractual and
institutional arrangements are crucial determinants of success.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: We aim to recruit excellent graduate students with a strong and credible interest in Evidence-Based Economics. Graduate students should be highly motivated and able to conduct independent research. The program is taught entirely in English.
Proficiency in German is not required. We expect knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics at an advanced Master's level. It is not our objective to provide such basic training. Therefore, the standard entry requirement is a completed Master's degree in economics. Exceptions from this rule are possible in special circumstances. In these cases, any missing graduate-level training will be specified in an individual supervision agreement, with suitable courses to be chosen from the participating Departments&# 39;
Economics Master programs. As a general rule, these courses have to be passed in the first semester of our graduate program.

WHERE YOU CAN LEARN MORE: For further details on the research and teaching program, the participating faculty, and the application procedure, please consult our website:
http://www.evidence-based-economics.de

Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2013. Under certain conditions, the admission committee can make an early admission decision.
Application Deadline : 30 April 2013

Germany : PhD studentship-World Heritage Site

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) is offering 1 research position for PhD-candidates for 3 years (65% TV-L EG 13) on the study World Heritage Site Aachen Cathedral€  ’´ within the research group €  ’³Knowledge of the World €  ’¶ Heritage of Mankind: The History of UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage€  ’´.
The research group is situated at the Leibniz Institute of European History and funded by the Leibniz Gemeinschaft (Leibniz Association) .
It investigates for the first time the genesis of UNESCO World Heritage after the Second World War on the basis of historical sources. The project combines the global dimensions with the national and local contexts. The project consists of a longitudinal postdoctoral study focusing on the emergence of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage as well as the accession procedure from 1972 to 1994 and four doctoral studies which deal with sites which have had a specific effect on the World Heritage programme since its beginnings in the 1970s and 1980s: the Gal€  ápagos Islands, Aachen Cathedral, Auschwitz Concentration Camp and the Old City and City Walls of Jerusalem. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to these objectives in close collaboration with the other colleagues in the research project.
The PhD project: The entry of Aachen Cathedral on the World Heritage List in 1978 was justified on the basis that the cathedral symbolizes the political and religious renewal of the €  ’³West€  ’´ under Charlemagne. The cathedral and its history were thus depicted as the birthplace of Europe and also as a conceptual forbearer of European unification on the basis of Christianity. As the coronation church and the most important pilgrimage site north of the Alps, the cathedral constituted a point of reference for the foundation myth of the Christian occident.
The emergence of this myth, the role of Aachen Cathedral in establishing it, and the implied differentiations between Christian Europe and other world regions and world religions are examined in this subproject. The reception of the Middle Ages in the 19th and 20th centuries is as central in this context as the local and national significance of the site, and the way it is embedded in political and church rituals.
Applicants must hold a Master degree in history or related subjects. Successful applicants will be expected to be in residence at Mainz (Germany) and participate in IEG activities and events. They will hold a part-time position at IEG and have access to travel funds. The salary
is commensurate with TV-L EG 13 (65%).The appointment will start on 1 July 2013, and is awarded for 3 years.
Applications must include a CV, academic transcripts and a short statement of research interests (not more than one page). As an independent research institute the IEG does not confer academic degrees. PhD-theses are supervised at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz or at a university of the candidate€  ’²s choice. The international academic advisory board of the research group will provide assistance.
Complete applications are to be submitted electronically via email (all documents in one PDF) by February 28, 2013, with the code number €  ’³2013-UNESCO- Aachen€  ’´ to the following address Leibniz-Institut f€  ür Europ€  äische Geschichte Mainz Verwaltung Alte Universit€  ätsstr. 19 55116 Mainz
seibel@ieg-mainz. de
For queries about the vacancy, please contact Dr. Andrea Rehling (rehling@ieg- mainz.de).
IEG is an equal opportunity/ affirmative- action employer. In case of
equality of qualification and suitability of applicants, the
applications made by female researchers will be given preferential
consideration. We also encourage applications from disabled persons

Germany : PhD. and postdoctoral projects in Systems Biology of Development

We are looking for biologists, mathematicians, and physicists interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or receiving postdoctoral training in the field of ystems Biology of Development at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tuebingen. We study classical developmental biology questions with quantitative methods and mathematical modeling.

We want to understand how extracellular signaling molecules pattern developing embryos and tissues. How are the appropriate distributions of signaling molecules achieved such that cells receive the right amount of signal at the right time? How do signaling systems concertedly coordinate proper patterning? How is the spatial range of signaling molecules regulated during development to establish the correct tissue proportions in differently sized embryos? We use zebrafish and flies as model systems and combine genetic, biophysical, and theoretical approaches to address this question.

Germany : English Doctoral student position with a doctoral grant in tumor cell and molecular biology

The main objectives of the Department of Oncology-Pathology are basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. 37 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 120 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.
Description of research group and projectDepartment of Oncology-Pathology is looking for a student who wants to work with Prof. Dan Grandér, docent Katja Pokrovskaja Tamm and co-workers to study the role of autophagy in anti-cancer therapy. The exact mechanism by which chemo-therapeutic drugs kill cancer cells is still not fully understood. Many drugs induce autophagy, a cellular response to starvation and stress, and its role in drug-induced cell death is controversial.  The goal is in a high throughput manner to determine how autophagy is involved in response to cancer treatment and cancer cell survival. In addition, we want to characterize and validate novel compounds that inhibit autophagy and reveal the molecular mechanisms of drug-induced autophagy. The overall aim of our research is to improve performance of anti-cancer drugs and create novel treatments for personalized and targeted cancer therapy.
Duties and responsibilitiesThe PhD student will be responsible for the planning, experimental work, data analysis and presentation in a close collaboration with both the group members and with our external collaborators such as the Chemical Biology Consortium at KI (LCBKI) and the Biotech Company Sprint Bioscience. Germany : PhD studentship on eye-based context-awareness

The Perceptual User Interfaces (PUI) research group at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, headed by Dr. Andreas Bulling, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship on eye-based context-awareness.

Context-awareness has emerged as a key area of research in ubiquitous computing and human-computer interaction (HCI). A promising new source of context information is in the movements of the eyes. The movement patterns our eyes perform as we carry out different activities reveal a lot about the activities themselves and the underlying cognitive processes. In a similar manner, location or a particular environment may influence our eye movements.
Because we use our eyes in almost everything that we do, eye movement analysis has the potential to provide useful information for a variety of context recognition problems.

The proposed PhD project will develop and study pattern recognition methods and machine learning techniques for context inference based on eye movement analysis. Potential applications are in activity and health monitoring, location-awareness, assisted living, and cognition-aware user interfaces. The research will be experimental, using portable eye tracking equipment and wearable sensor systems, and will involve user studies and data collection in daily life settings. In addition to experimental skills, the work will require to develop a thorough understanding of pattern recognition, machine learning and statistical signal processing techniques suitable for inferring various aspects of context from eye movements.

The research directions of particular interest include but are not limited to:
    * Pattern recognition methods and eye movement features for modelling
      of visual behaviour

    * Machine learning techniques for context inference from eye movements

    * Context inference from simultaneous monitoring of eye and body
      movements in daily life settings

The Max Planck Institute for Informatics offers a highly collegiate and stimulating environment for doctoral research training. The successful candidate will join a young and ambitious research group that is at the forefront of this emerging research area. The candidate will be  expected to contribute to the strong profile of the group by participating in the preparation and publication of research results at the level of international excellence.

We invite applications from enthusiastic individuals, who are able to work independently and have an excellent first degree in Computer Science or a related field relevant to the proposed research, and very good knowledge of machine learning, pattern recognition, or statistical signal processing. The studentship is not restricted by nationality. Interested applicants are advised to consult previous work on eye-based recognition of activities and cognitive processes [1,2,3]. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to initiate contact with Dr. Andreas Bulling prior to their application.

Applicants should submit their CV, a copy of school and university degree and course transcripts with grades (Abitur, Vor- and Hauptdiplom for German applicants), names and contact information of two references, a description of research interests and a short research proposal. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications should be emailed to andreas.bulling@acm.org
Review of applications will start on 1st March 2013. Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
Application Deadline : 1 March 2013

Germany : PhD studentship on pervasive eye-based human-computer interfaces

The Perceptual User Interfaces (PUI) research group at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, headed by Dr. Andreas Bulling, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship on pervasive eye-based human-computer
interfaces.

Existing work on eye-based human-computer interaction mainly developed use of the eyes in stationary ("desktop") settings that involved single user, single device and WIMP-style interactions. Pervasive eye tracking - continuous eye tracking and analysis 24/7 - promises a paradigm shift in how the eyes are used as an input modality and points the way towards a new class of pervasive eye-based human-computer interfaces. Pervasive eye-based human-computer interfaces aim to analyse and exploit the information contained in visual behaviour in all explicit and implicit interactions that people perform with computing systems throughout the day.

The proposed PhD project will develop and study interaction techniques and models for pervasive eye-based human-computer interaction. Potential applications are in multimodal and attentive user interfaces, mobile virtual reality systems, information visualisation and automotive interfaces. The research will be experimental, using stationary and portable eye tracking equipment and wearable sensor systems, and will involve controlled user studies and data collection in daily life settings. In addition to experimental skills, the work will require to develop a thorough understanding of cognitive and physical ergonomics, the design and implementation of prototype interactive systems, as well as statistical data analysis techniques suitable for evaluating and characterising human-computer interfaces.
The research directions of particular interest include but are not limited to:

    * Interaction techniques and models for pervasive eye-based single and multi-user human-computer interaction

    * Real-time user interfaces that rely on multiple input modalities, such as gaze, body movements or speech

    * Pervasive eye-based interaction for security and privacy, information visualisation, and mobile virtual reality

Germany : PhD Position-Functional characterisation of RNPs in plant development

Within the frame of the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 960 “Ribosome formation: principles of RNP biogenesis and control of their function we offer a PhD position for a highly motivated student. The position is open immediately.

Polar distribution of mRNA is a means of regulation translation spatially and temporally. The phenomenon is well characterized in animals and fungi such as Drosophila embryogenesis, neuron differentiation or mating type switching in yeast, but so far nothing is known in plants. We are currently characterizing a number of candidate genes in the Arabidopsis egg cell using in vivo visualization of mRNA (Schönberger et al. 2012, The Plant Journal). The major topic of the PhD project will be to study one class of candidate genes, which encodes RNA binding proteins. Using a wide range of biochemical, molecular and cellular tools these proteins will be purified and RNA targets as well as interacting proteins and non-coding RNAs shall be identified and further characterized.

The successful candidate will be offered a structured PhD program at the Graduate Research Academy RNA Biology (more information: http://graduate-academy.sfb960.de), which is integrated into the Biochemie-Zentrum Regensburg that is equipped with state-of-the-art proteomic, cellular and structural analytical tools. We invite applications from highly qualified and motivated students of any nationality. Sound biochemical skills are of advantage.

We are looking forward to your application for the PhD fellowship in our group.
