The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modeling
(IMPRS-ESM) offers doctoral program in Germany. Students must hold a
master’s degree or a German ‘diploma’ in the field of physics,
geophysical sciences, (incl. meteorology and oceanography), chemistry,
ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics, or
political science. The International students can apply for this
program. The financial support is offered as a stipend for three years
of duration. The students are selected if they are short-listed in the
interview.
Study Subject(s): Research topics are:
critical transitions in the terrestrial components of the Earth system,
Effects of land use change on soil carbon stocks and climate,
Potentials and side-effects of afforestation for climate change
mitigation, Ice-age ocean circulation, Extreme Events at different
spatial and temporal scales, Thermodynamics of the Asian Monsoonal
Circulation, Towards coupled data assimilation in a climate model, The
role of turbulent mixing in the ocean circulation.

Scholarship Description: The
IMPRS on Earth System Modeling (IMPRS-ESM) is a multi- and
interdisciplinary doctoral program that associates several German
research institutions. Students contribute to the development and
application of numerical models of different complexities, including
natural aspects as well as the human dimension. Through the development
of integrated Earth system models the IMPRS-ESM contributes to an
improved understanding of the global environment and the prediction of
interactions and feed backs in between the individual components of the
Earth system.
Number of awards offered: The IMPRS-ESM has been able to assign 5 to 10 new doctoral positions to promising applicants each year.
Duration of award(s): Grant is offered for 3 years.
