Germany : Doctoral position (KID) in Hematopoietic Development and Bioinformatics

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 11 divisions and it is representative for the laboratory medicine in the full sence of the word. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.
Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM)Assistant Professor Robert Mansson’s research group is offering one PhD position in the field of hematopoietic development and bioinformatics. The project is aimed at understanding the developmental progression from stem and progenitor cells into mature blood cells and the transcriptional networks that drive this process. This will be studied through a combination of advanced cell sorting (to acquire primary cells), molecular biology and whole-genome sequencing approaches. Analysis of high-throughput sequencing data will be a substantial part of the project. In a broader perspective, understand the hematopoietic differentiation process will help us understand of diseases that originate from developmental defects such as cancer and immunodeficiencies.
The PhD position is for four years and is supported by the KID program at the Karolinska Institutet and by Assistant Professor Robert Mansson’s external grants.
Position to start as soon as possible and will remain open until filled.

ResponsibilitiesThe applicant is expected to be a talented and enthusiastic researcher with strong drive to perform basic research. He or she is expected to play a strong role in the elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design, experimentation, data analysis (including bioinformatical analysis of high-throughput sequencing data) and presentation/publication of results. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment but retain enough independence to explore his/her results from a conceptual standpoint.

Entry requirementsTo meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies, an applicant must have:
1. taken a second-cycle qualification
2. completed course requirements for at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 second cycle higher education credits, or
3. otherwise acquired essentially the same knowledge in or outside Sweden.
4. a master degree in one of the following fields: biotechnology, chemical engineering, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics or related. People with a combined education covering biology, math and programming are very much encouraged to apply.
An applicant who met the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies before 1 July 2007 is regarded as having met the current requirements, though no longer than until the end of June 2015.
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:
- Analytical skill
- Ability to express oneself both orally and in writing (English)
- Documented laboratory skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to third-cycle studies in the subject
The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
A decision concerning the doctoral student position will be made after admission to third-cycle studies.

1. A complete curriculum vitae, including higher education degrees, previous academic positions/
experience, current position, academic distinctions, and other skills relevant for the application.
2. Motivation for research training (no more than one page).
3. Certificate(s) of higher education degree(s).
4. Recommendation letters.
Applications should be done through Karolinska Institutets recruitment system NetRecruiter.
