Norway : PhD research fellowship positions at Department of Mathematical Sciences

Up to 6 PhD research fellowship positions are vacant at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, NTNU.

The PhD research fellowship positions are intended to give promising candidates an opportunity to pursue a research activity on an advanced level leading to a doctoral degree. The Department of Mathematical Sciences conduct research on an international high level within the main disciplines algebra, analysis, differential equations and numerical analysis, geometry/topology, and statistics. Part of the research is also done in close cooperation with other fields of science and technology within NTNU as well as in cooperation with industry and external research institutions.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences want to support the best candidates and therefore makes no restriction on the field of research except that it has to be within the main subjects of the department as mentioned above. Each applicant has to contact one of the research groups at the department in order to get in contact with an adviser, and together with the advisor produce a short project description. Strategic considerations may be taken in the final distribution of the fellowships between the disciplines.

The fellows will be part of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU and will have their workplace there. See http://www.ntnu.no/imf .

The Department has today approximately 60 PhD-students.

Those fellows who speak a Scandinavian language will be employed for 4 years with teaching and other duties of approximately 25 % of the time available. Those fellows who do not master a Scandinavian language will be offered a 3 year appointment. The applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language have to document a thorough knowledge of English (with TOEFL score of 600 or more).

Applicants must have a master/cand.scient/siv.ing.-degree within one of the subjects covered by the department (algebra, analysis, differential equations and numerical analysis, geometry/topology, and statistics) or a corresponding education and also satisfy the requirement for entering the PhD-program at NTNU. See http://www.ime.ntnu.no/forskning/phd for information about the PhD-program at NTNU.

MSc-students in their last year are also invited to apply. Employment will then be postponed until the master degree is finished.

For more information, please contact Professor Sverre O. Smalø, phone (+47) 73 59 17 50, or by e-mail: sverresm@math.ntnu.no .

The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees.

NTNU also wishes to increase the number of women on its workforce, and women are specifically encouraged to apply.
