Philippines : Research Position in Genetics for Developing Countries Students at IRRI

International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) announces research position. The position is being offered for Developing Countries students in Genetics. Applicants applying for the position must have BS Biology major in Genetics, Molecular Biology or related discipline. The successful candidate will work in the Genotyping Services Lab (GSL) in the Molecular Marker Applications Lab at IRRI.

Scholarship Description: The successful candidate will work in the Genotyping Services Lab (GSL) in the Molecular Marker Applications Lab at IRRI. She/he will process customer samples for rice DNA extraction and SNP marker genotyping with the assistance of a research technician.
Roles and Responsibilities: -Review customer sample submission forms, assist in the import of DNA samples, review sample entries in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and generate barcodes
-Process incoming DNA samples: assign sample storage location, arrange samples in 96-well format, check DNA quality and concentration and prepare aliquots for genotyping
-When needed, harvest rice leaf tissue samples from the greenhouse or field, perform semi-automated DNA extraction, check DNA quality and concentration and dilute samples
-Process samples through the different SNP marker genotyping protocols, including the BeadXpress Reader for 384-SNP sets and the Fluidigm EP1 system for sets of 24 and 96 SNPs
-Track maintenance schedules for equipment, ensure that the LIMS is updated for the lab supply inventory and sample tracking, analyze SNP data and prepare customer reports and data sets
-Assist in developing training and marketing materials, mentoring others, preparing reports and performing all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by the supervising IRS.
