Prospective
PhD students wishing to work on a topic within Modern Iranian History
or relating to the study of Contemporary Iran or more generally to
Modern Middle Eastern History at the University of Manchester are
eligible and welcome to apply to these albeit highly competitive (open
competition across all Arts and Social Sciences disciplines) schemes.
Contemporary Iran and modern Iranian history PhD studentships at the University of Manchester for September 2013 entry
1. ESRC fully funded PhD Studentships for modern Iranian history and the study of contemporary Iran at the University of Manchester
Middle Eastern Studies at Manchester will have access to up to three full PhD studentships in Middle Eastern topics for September 2013 entry.
These ESRC awards will be awarded in open competition in cooperation with the North West Doctoral Training Centre of which the University of Manchester is part. These studentships cover both (home) fees and maintenance and are restricted to applicants fulfilling certain
residence requirements.

Application to the PhD programme is expected by 17 January 2013 and for the scholarship itself by 4 February 2013.
Applicants are encouraged to discuss their application with their prospective supervisor before submission.
2. The University of Manchester President’s Doctoral Scholar Award (open to international and home/EU applicants)
Applications are welcome for four fully funded President’s Doctoral Scholarships to be awarded in open competition in subjects that include modern Iranian history, the study of contemporary Iran, and modern Middle Eastern History. These awards too cover (home or overseas) fees

All research topics represented at Manchester’s Middle Eastern Studies are eligible, including modern Iranian history, the study of contemporary Iran, and modern Middle Eastern History. The deadline for application to the PhD programme is 1 February 2013, and for the PDR
studentship itself 1 March 2013. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their application with their prospective supervisor before submission.
3. Partial PhD funding
In addition to the above full scholarships (fees and maintenance) , there are a number of Graduate Scholarships and fee bursaries in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures (SALC) of which Middle Eastern Studies is a part. These School awards often come with the opportunity to teach or assist in research-related activities. These awards are open to both
Home/EU and Overseas students. The awards are usually for three years full time or six years part time (subject to satisfactory progress) for new starters.
