Austria : The 2013 CeMM PhD Program Vienna

CeMM is an international and interdisciplinary research Center in Molecular Medicine installed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From the clinic to the clinic: Driven by medical needs, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches focused on cancer, inflammation and immune disorders. CeMM has a new tailor-made building at the center of the Vienna Medical University/General Hospital Campus and close to the heart of the city. According to a study by The Scientist, CeMM is ranked as the best European place to work in Academia 2012, see: http://the-scientist.com/2012/08/01/best-places-to-work-academia-2012.
THE 2013 CEMM PHD PROGRAM
For our next PhD Program starting in October 2013, we are looking for exceptionally motivated candidates with a keen interest in genomics and medicine and a strong interest to work in teams. You will get the chance to work at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary molecular medicine research and to be trained by the entire CeMM Faculty to become one of the scientists shaping the future of molecular medicine. The CeMM PhD program is a unique blend of practical training, lectures and mentoring that builds on the guidelines for PhD programs of CeMM’s home academic institution, the Medical University of Vienna.Available Projects:
  • TBK1 – minding the gap between innate immunity and autophagy (Ref: PhD KBennett)
  • Dissection of viral and host determinants of persistent infections (Ref: PhD ABergthaler)
  • Immunomodulation of atherosclerosis by targeting oxidation-specific epitopes (Ref: PhD CBinder) *
  • Reprogramming cancer cells using epigenetic drug combinations (Ref: PhD CBock 1)
  • Computational modeling of cancer stem cell differentiation (Ref: PhD CBock 2)
  • Identification of novel monogenetic factors controlling immune homeostasis and autoimmunity (2 positions available - Ref: PhD KBoztug) *
  • Linking posttranslational modification and protein dynamics with cancer and immunity pathways (Ref: PhD JColinge 1)
  • A cancer grammar (2 positions available - Ref: PhD JColinge & Ref: PhD RKralovics)
  • Receptor cross talk in infection and inflammation (Ref: PhD SKnapp) *
  • Identification of molecules and pathways that maintain genome integrity under replicative stress (Ref: PhD JLoizou)
  • Discovering gene-drug interactions in breast cancer with a systematic and genetically tractable model (Ref: PhD SNijman)
  • Characterizing and re-engineering the innate immunity molecular machinery (Ref: PhD GSuperti-Furga) *
Requirements:
Final degree in the diploma studies of medicine, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics or in any scientific/ technical, subject-relevant diploma studies. Certificate needed before Oct 2013! The working language at CeMM is English, so excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
Application Details:
1.   Candidates should provide a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, names and contact details of two suggested referees. Save your application documents as one PDF file.
