Austria : PhD position in Geographic Information Science and Geoinformatics

The Interfaculty department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg aims to combine high quality education with excellent research. The Faculty has several research groups with an outstanding international reputation.

The PhD student will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers and educators in the field of Geographic Information Science and Geoinformatics.

The candidate will work in the field of Geographic Information Science, Geoinformatics and spatial analysis. Collaborations with other departments are foreseen. The candidate should bring experience and understanding in the field of Geographic Information Science, Geoinformatics, Geography, landscape analysis or other related fields. A high technical understanding is a prerequisite for this position. The candidate should be qualified for and willing to perform state-of-the-art research, and to acquire a PhD degree in this field. Details will be specified in an iterative process with the supervisor.

Beyond that, excellent communication and social skills are required for working in a small dynamic and interdisciplinary team as well as for conducting research independently. Collaboration on publications with other members of the project team is expected with the aim of publishing in international journals and conferences.
Eligibility: Suitable applicants should meet the following requirements:
-          A master’s degree or equivalent in Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Geography or other related disciplines.
-          Interest and ideally expertise in working with sensor systems (image processing, air quality, traffic or mobile phone applications etc.) for the establishment of a ‘human sensor’ based (near)-real time geography.
-          Very good English language proficiency (German language skills are appreciated but not compulsory)
-          Experience and interest in Geographic Information Science, spatial analysis, live geography & sensor systems.
-          Ideally, the candidate has some experience with data mining, programming and WEB 2.0 applications.
-          Additional requirements include international experience and/or working experience, strong personality characteristics, flexibility, ability to work in a team and interest to work scientifically.

Austria : 1 open PhD Position for FEMALE STUDENTS

1 open PhD Position for FEMALE STUDENTS in the Doctoral College for Environmental Informatics at the Vienna University of Technology, Distributed Systems Group (DSG) In the framework of the doctoral college Environmental Informatics, expected to start in March 2013 for a period of 3 years, the Vienna University of Technology has 1 open PhD student position for a female student.

An accepted PhD student will be paid a salary of 949.50 EUR per month, 14 times per year for 15 hours/week working basis (salary scale 2012). Additional payments are possible based on availability of external funding sources (up to 35.448 EUR per year for 40 working hours/week in the salary scale 2012).

The doctoral college "Environmental Informatics" as an interdisciplinary approach aims to establish research collaboration amongst   Architecture & Planning, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Informatics and Mathematics and Geoinformation. CeMM is an international and interdisciplinary research Center in Molecular Medicine installed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. THE 2013 CEMM PHD PROGRAM

Austria : FELLOWSHIPS AT THE VIENNA WIESENTHAL INSTITUTE FOR HOLOCAUST STUDIES (VWI)

The Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI) invites applications for its fellowships for the academic year 2013/2014, beginning October 1, 2013. The VWI is an academic institution dedicated to the research and documentation of antisemitism, ra- cism
and the Holocaust. Conceived and established during Simon Wiesenthal’s lifetime, the VWI re- ceives funding from the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research as well as the City of Vienna. Re- search at the institute focuses on the Holocaust in its European context, including
its antecedents and its aftermath.

Research projects are to focus on a topic relevant to the research interests of the VWI. Within this parameter, applicants are free to choose their own topic, approach and methodology. Fellows will have access to the archives of the institute, now under development. It is expected that fellows will make use of relevant resources from the
collection in their research projects. Research results will be the subject of formal fellows' discussions and will be presented to the wider public at regular inter- vals.

Funding is available for
• two senior fellows,
• two research fellows and •
four junior fellows
to work at the institute for a duration of between six and twelve months.

Senior fellowships will be awarded to qualified scholars who have completed their Ph.D.s, have au- thored exceptional academic publications and have been working at a university or academic institu- tion for several years. Research fellowships will be awarded to scholars who  have completed their Ph.D.s and have pub- lished worksin their research field. Junior fellowships will be awarded to Ph.D. candidates. With its fellowships, the VWI seeks to encourage communication and academic exchange among the fellows, providing an additional benefit beyond their research work. The fellows are expected to fur- ther the institute's academic work and provide each other with advice and support in their research projects. Fellows must be regularly present at the VWI.

The main objective of the project is the detection of unusual and, thus, potentially interesting sequences in large video collections. Core components include dynamic feature selection, multimodal sequence representation, and data mining and clustering.
