The Division of Scientific Computing
at Uppsala University, is a center for research and education in
Scientific Computing. The research has a broad scope, ranging from
mathematical analysis, development and analysis of numerical
approximations, numerical linear algebra, software development and
high-performance computing (HPC) to collaborative projects in
computational science and engineering, and industrial applications.
Application fields include fluid flow, electromagnetics, acoustics,
geology, systems biology, quantum mechanics, financial mathematics, and
genetics. The Division has an extensive international and national
research network
The graduate education program in scientific computing has so far (2012) yielded a total of 93 PhDs. Many of them have continued a career as leading researchers in Scientific Computing.
Examples of possible PhD student projects and further information is found at http://www.it.uu.se/research/scicomp/PhD-positions-2013
A PhD position in Scientific Computing requires a Master of Science in for example engineering physics or applied mathematics, or a corresponding degree in a field, relevant for the topic of the PhD thesis. Good communication skills in English are necessary. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).
Applications should include a description of research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant publications, and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to provide contact information to reference persons. Candidates should indicate a preferred PhD student project(s) listed on the home page above. Applications may be submitted by candidates that have not fully completed the Master of Science degree (or equivalent), however all applicants should state the earliest feasible starting date of employment.
The department is striving to achieve gender balance. Therefore female candidates are particularly invited to apply.
