Spain : MIT-Zaragoza African Supply Chain Professional Scholarship

The MIT-Zaragoza Program and Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) are awarding tuition scholarship foroutstanding African candidates to undertake the Master of Engineering in Logistics and Supply ChainManagement (ZLOG) program.

While the ZLOG Program attracts people from around the world to learn and interact at the ZLC and MIT, the Foundation through this scholarship hopes to attract outstanding future leaders from Africa who want to pursue a career in logistics. ZLC thereby provides a unique opportunity for African citizens to develop the skills related to the logistics sector.
Eligibility
Candidates will be expected to show extraordinary potential for leadership and professional success, bringing new vision and commitment to the area of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Furthermore, candidates must comply with the following criteria:
• Granted admission to the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program.
• Fluency in English, competitive TOEFL score. Exceptions may be granted to individuals who have demonstrated evidence of advanced verbal and written proficiency in the English language. Furthermore, the ability to speak French is a plus.
• Completion of a four year undergraduate program equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree.
• Competitive GMAT score. Exceptions may be granted to individuals who have demonstrated strong academic achievement in completing a college degree - including some quantitative training.
• Professional excellence with a background or experience in supply chain anagement/logistics, or exceptional academic achievement Coverage
The scholarship covers full tuition for the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program, which amounts to €21,500 for the academic year 2013-2014.

Spain : PhD position in Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics

The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) offers a 36-months salaried PhD position (extensible under certain conditions) linked to the ERC Advanced Grant project X-CHEM (XUV/X-ray lasers for ultrafast electronic control in molecules), starting no later than September, 2013.
The successful applicant shall develop a research project on “Theoretical Modelling of Laser-Induced Ultrafast Phenomena”, oriented to obtain a PhD diploma, focused on the development of novel computational tools for the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for molecules under the action of ultra-short pulses from new light sources.

Prospect candidates must have a Bachelor degree in physics or chemistry (3 years) and a post graduate specialization degree (e.g. MSc) in physics or theoretical chemistry; good knowledge of at least one programming language (Fortran 90, C, C++, Python, etc.); Excellent knowledge of quantum mechanics, basic electrodynamics, basic atomic and molecular physics; Fluent English; enthusiasm for learning and commitment to teamwork.

Spain : “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa International PhD Programme at CNIO

“La Caixa” Foundation and the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness offers fully funded international PhD programme in state-of-the-art basic and applied cancer research at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). The international students can apply for this scholarship. Students must have a university degree (BSc, MSc, Diploma, DEA, Licenciatura, Laurea or equivalent) in biomedical sciences. Applicants must be proficient in English and the upper age limit for eligibility is 30 years. Selection criteria are academic qualifications and scientific potential. Eligibility: -This call is open to applicants from all nationalities.

Scholarship Description: The “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa International PhD Programme at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) offers cross-disciplinary training in state-of-the-art basic and applied cancer research within an international and very dynamic scientific environment. Five four-year fellowships will be available during 2013. Highly motivated individuals are encouraged to apply for the following of CNIO’s research programmes: Molecular Oncology, Structural Biology and Biocomputing, BBVA Foundation–CNIO Cancer Cell Biology, Molecular Pathology, Human Cancer Genetics, Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Research.
Number of awards offered: “la Caixa” will provide support for five highly qualified graduate students to carry out their experimental work towards obtaining a PhD degree.
Duration of award(s): The programme has 4 year duration.
What does it cover? During the first two years, students will receive a total annual stipend of 18,069 Euros plus a onetime annual payment of 1,500 Euros. During the third and fourth year, the graduate students will receive an employment contract with a gross annual salary of 26.700 Euros plus a onetime annual payment of 1,700 Euros.
Selection Criteria: Admission to the programme is on a competitive basis. All applications are evaluated solely on the basis of academic qualifications and scientific potential.
Notification: The Selection Committee will consider all the applications and select a number of candidates to visit the CNIO in Madrid where they will be interviewed by potential supervisors and discuss their research interests. Interviews are tentatively scheduled to take place in early June, 2013.

Spain : Two PhD researcher positions at University of Alcala

Concerns two full-time (minimum 3-year) PhD research positions in the domain of Semantic Data Infrastructures, at the department of Computer Science, University of Alcala (UAH, http://www.uah.es). The PhD candidates will be involved in the FP7 research projects "agINFRA: A data infrastructure to support agricultural scientific communities" (http://aginfra.eu) and "SemaGrow: Data Intensive Techniques to Boost the Real-Time Performance of Global Agricultural Data Infrastructures" (http://www.semagrow.eu) that study scalable, efficient, and robust data services on top of heterogeneous large-scale data repositories and collections.

The two positions are offered as part of the collaboration between the Information Engineering (IE) research unit (http://www.ieru.org) of the University of Alcala and Agro-Know Technologies (http://wiki.agroknow.gr), as part of their joint effort to contribute to the semantic interoperability and data analysis layers of these projects. Agro-Know is a small but fast growing research enterprise that aims to deploy meaningful and innovative services around high-quality agricultural data pools. The two groups have been working together closely in the past years, offering the opportunity to PhD students to work on research solutions that are applicable to real-life problems.

RESEARCH CONTEXT
In the agINFRA and SemaGrow projects, more than 15 organisations from Europe and the world (including prestigious institutions such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) are working together to offer better access to information for agricultural researchers and practitioners, using many ICT techniques such as intelligent information management, semantic enrichment and integration, as well as social data analysis. The successful candidates will work on tasks related to semantic infrastructures and data science, in order to solve research problems related to deploying data-driven services for agriculture.

It is expected that the PhD candidates will carry out applied research work that will start from the establishment of a theoretical framework, continue with the implementation of a software prototype and the experimentation with real data, and conclude with the validation of a proposed solution through a real-life user study.

PROFILES
Highly motivated applicants are sought to cover the two positions described below. In general, successful candidates are generally expected to have:
- Good analytical and software development skills,
- Good command of spoken and written English,
- Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with other researchers and developers having diverse background
- Some experience with writing research papers and technical reports

In addition, for each position some specific qualifications are desired.

(a) PhD position on topics related to Semantic Infrastructures

The candidate should have a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or relevant disciplines, a Master Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, as well as the following qualifications:
- 1-3 years of research and development experience in industry or academia (e.g. MSc, PhD, R&D Engineer)
- Very good knowledge and experience in object-oriented and Web programming technologies (such as Java, Javascript, SQL, XML, UML, J2EE, PHP, Ajax)
- Good knowledge and experience in database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
- Experience and interest in semantic web technologies such as RDF and OWL is desired (but not mandatory)

(b) PhD position on topics related to Data Science

The candidate should have a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or other relevant disciplines, a Master Degree on similar topics, as well as the following qualifications:
- 1-3 years of research and development experience in industry or academia (e.g. MSc, PhD, R&D Engineer)
- Good knowledge of data analysis methods and algorithms
- Experience of working with statistical analysis over large data sets
- Good knowledge (and more than two years) of Java programming
- Experience and interest  in big data technologies such as Hadoop, MapReduce, and NoSQL is desired (but not mandatory)

CONDITIONS
The PhD positions are shared between the two groups and candidates will be hosted either at Alcala (Spain) or Athens (Greece). The research and development work to be carried out will be connected to the agINFRA and SemaGrow projects, depending on the profiles and interests of the candidates. These are full-time positions for 3 years minimum, with a satisfactory payment scheme that will cover the living and tuition fees of the candidates, as well as their research-related expenses (participation in relevant conferences etc.).

Applicants will be requested to prepare a research proposal and complete a research and development assignment during the first 6 months. After the successful completion of this phase, their positions will be extended up to 3 fully-funded years. The PhD candidates will be working mostly at the premises of the group that they will be directly collaborating with, either in Alcala or in Athens. They will be also expected to make at least one research visit of a short duration (typically between 1-3 months) to the other group.

The PhD regulations and procedures that apply are the ones of the University of Alcala and the candidates are expected to prepare and defend a PhD thesis within these 3 years.
