Within the group for Multiscale Modeling and Simulation of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente a vacancy for a PhD student exists. This position is part of a joint project with the Process Technology Group at Eindhoven University of Technology, involving a further experimental PhD and a computational PD position. Both research groups are members of the Center for Interface Research (CIR), a collaborative research center of scientists from the Universities of Delft, Eindhoven and Twente. The Dutch Technology Foundation funds the project.

In this project, two PhD students and a post-doc will study flow-pattern development in heated ducts under boiling conditions. One of the PhD students, stationed in Eindhoven, will carry out experiments with two different fluids, in two test rigs, with advanced measuring techniques such as phosphoric LIF, while the second PhD student, stationed in Twente, will focus on numerical modeling and simulation of flow-pattern development under phase transition.
In the Multiscale Modeling and Simulation group research is conducted on mathematical models, analysis and simulation strategies for fluid mechanical problems. The theme relevant for the topic of boiling flow regimes is phase-transitional flow. Particular attention in this project will go to transport processes across interfaces between vapor bubbles and liquid as occurring during flow regime transitions in heated two-phase flows.

The diffuse interface model will be further developed to allow simulation of such flows with boiling in ducts. The connection with the experimental work will be sought to strengthen the validation of the model and facilitate scaling of the flow-regime maps measured.

The PhD student in this computational modeling project will contribute to the research objectives through:

 •development of new simulation capabilities in multiphase fluid dynamics for simulation of boiling phenomena;
•implementation of numerical methods on High Performance Computing facilities;
•application of the developed simulation tools to a range of realistic regimes of boiling heat and mass transfer.

Netherlands : 2 PhD positions: Transport at the microscopic interface

Transport phenomena are crucial for many chemical, pharmaceutical and biochemical processes. Many membrane-based processes suffer from transport limitations near the permeable boundary. We aim at studying these phenomena on a microscopic scale, using experimental techniques including micro particle imaging velocimetry, and fluorescence microscopy.
The projects are part of the ERC Starting Grant of Prof. Lammertink and aim at studying transport phenomena within microfluidic platforms to better understand the influence of small-scale effects. Two PhD vacancies are available, both relating to transport phenomena near a membrane boundary:

Biofouling. Bacteria growth in water treatment systems is a prominent challenge still. The proposed research will focus on the detailed fluid flow analysis and mass transport of nutrients and oxygen with respect to biofilm attachment and growth in predefined geometries.
Electrodialysis. Ion selective membranes are employed through which ions are transport by an externally applied electric field. Electrodialysis is applied in e.g. water desalination and salt production processes. Under extreme concentration polarization conditions, electroconvection processes appear. The objective is to study these processes and their response to confinement and heterogeneity.

Ons aanbod / Our offer
The research will be carried out in the group Soft matter, Fluidics and Interfaces (SFI) of Prof. Rob G.H. Lammertink at the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. The group is hosted within the Mesa+ institute for nanotechnology, with full access to the Nanolab cleanroom facilities. We offer a contract for a full position (1 FTE, 38 working hours per week) for four years. Your monthly salary develops from 2042 € gross in the first year to 2612 € gross in the last year. Furthermore, we offer a holiday allowance of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and a number of additional benefits.

Netherlands : 2 PhD Positions Delta Engineering drowning or emerging

The Department of Physical Geography seeks two PhD candidates for the project Delta engineering: drowning or emerging, which is funded by STW (www.stw.nl).

In many deltas sediment starvation, sea level rise, and soil subsidence have become problematic, resulting in considerable threat of drowning and loss of land. To investigate how delta drowning can be prevented we will in this project investigate water flow and sediment processes and establish scenarios of for future delta development an ideal trial area: the Biesbosch (NL), an inland tidal delta (90 km2) of the rivers Rhine and Meuse, under influence of engineering works in the past, of recent and upcoming de-poldering, and future increases of tidal amplitude, sea level, and river peak discharges due to climate change.

The project involves 2 interrelated projects with joint field measurement campaigns, but different focus:
1. a PhD study on the hydro-morphological processes within this complex area, to predict the hydraulic and morphological changes resulting from river restoration and flood protection measures over the next 10 years. This project focuses on the measurement of hydrodynamics, sediment flow pathways, erosion of channels and banks, and sedimentation patterns within two former polders of the Biesbosch area. These data will allow to determine sediment budgets within the subsystems under different boundary conditions.
2. a PhD study on the longer-term (2050 – 2100) assessment of the hydro-morphological changes in the delta under future sea level rise, increased tidal dynamics, and changed river discharge. This project focuses on the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic modelling of the entire Biesbosch area.

The PhD candidates will collaborate intensely with each other and with external end-users, such as Deltares, Staatsbosbeheer, Rijkswaterstaat and consultancy firms.

Qualifications
For Project 1, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a MSc degree in Physical Geography or a closely related discipline and experience in field-data collection and computer simulation. For Project 2, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a MSc degree in Civil Engineering or Physical Geography or a closely related discipline, with experience in hydrodynamic and morphodynamic modelling.

Both candidates should have a strong motivation for scientific research; keen interest in translating scientific findings to practical applications, profound knowledge of river processes. Furthermore, the applicants should be proficient in English, have excellent scientific writing and planning skills, and be an enthusiastic team player. The ability to communicate the main research results to non-specialized end users is an essential aspect of this project.

Netherlands : PhD Student Neuroscience

The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the Faculty of Science’s largest institutes. Its approximately 200 scientists and staff members work in 14 research groups that perform excellent research centered on four themes: 1) The Living Cell, 2) Plant Signaling, 3) Neuroscience, and 4) Life Science Technologies.
The research group Cellular and System Neuroscience is part of the SILS Neuroscience theme and investigates the regulation of neuronal excitability and plasticity at the membrane, cellular and network level using electrophysiological, pharmacological and neuro-imaging techniques. The Neuroscience groups participate in the Graduate School for Neurosciences Amsterdam Rotterdam (ONWAR).
We have a position available for a PhD Student Neuroscience.

Project Description

The gating function of the perirhinal cortex: Characterization of its micro-circuit, its modulation by endocannabinoids and its role in epilepsy.
The perirhinal cortex is a brain region that operates as a functional gate between the neocortex and the hippocampal formation. It is involved in learning and memory, and could well play an important role in the generation of epilepsy.
The goal of this project is to characterize the micro-circuitry of the perirhinal cortex and in particular to understand the functioning of the gate. One important approach will be to quantify the balance between excitation and inhibition in the micro-circuit. This will require to investigate the participating excitatory and inhibitory neurons and their intercommunication. The candidate will also investigate the modulation of the circuit and its gating function by the endocannabinoid system. We hypothesize that break-down of the gate is an essential aspect of epileptogenesis which will be studied in an experimental model of epilepsy.
The experimental approach will use acute brain slices and employ voltage sensitive dye imaging, various patch clamping techniques, optogenetics, histology and pharmacological manipulation.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated, ambitious student with a Master degree in Neuroscience (or equivalent). Analytical skills and experimental talent are essential, a background in (cellular) electrophysiology is an advantage.

The NFP is initiated and fully funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation. The overall aim of the NFP is to help increase both the number and the competencies of skilled staff at a wide range of governmental and non-governmental organisations. The students have to be nominated by their employer to be eligible for the fellowship. There also has to be a clear need for training within the context of their organisation. After completing the training the student will return to his/her original workplace. This ensures the training is embedded within your organisation. Applicant will improve his/her knowledge and skills, learn about relevant global developments in their field and build an international network. The result is twofold: for applicant’s employing organization, it represents a direct investment in staff development; for student as a professional, the training is a valuable asset in further career.
Duration of award(s):  The fellowship is only intended for the duration of the course or programme for which the fellowship holder has been selected:-Master’s degree programmes: between 12 and 24 months
-Short courses: between two weeks and twelve months
-PhD-studies: PhD studies have a maximum duration of four years.

1.Biofouling. Bacteria growth in water treatment systems is a prominent challenge still. The proposed research will focus on the detailed fluid flow analysis and mass transport of nutrients and oxygen with respect to biofilm attachment and growth in predefined geometries.
2.Electrodialysis.

 Uw profiel / Your profile

You have a Masters degree in chemical engineering, applied physics, or other related discipline, with interest in (micro)fluidics and transport phenomena. The projects have a strong experimental approach, but requires connection with theory as well. Affinity for (CFD based) modeling is preferred. You have good command of English, both verbal and written.

Seen the interdisciplinary nature of the projects, the candidate is foreseen to interact with other researchers closely. This requires good communicative skills, enthusiasms, and project ownership.

Application Deadline : 31 January 2013
