Your Role
Research project:
BioVIRT - Network controlled Integration of Biological Wastewater Treatment Plants and Biogas Plants in the concept of Virtual Power Plants
The main objective of the project is the development of a novel approach to integrate Biogas Plants and Wastewater Treatment Plants with anaerobic digestion in Virtual Power Plants. This includes the following sub-objectives:
  • Inventory report on Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) with digestion and Biogas Plants (BPs) in Luxembourg; classification of plants according to available measuring equipment;  Selection of reference plants; acquisition of online data
  • Identification of general conditions (legal and technological) for the integration of WWTPs and BPs in Virtual Power Plants in Luxembourg
  • Development and testing of prediction models for the estimation of biogas and power production on WWTPs and BPs
  • Development of a suitable distributed energy management system for VPPs
  • Development of suitable simulation models of BPs and WWTPs with regard to biogas and power generation, integration of the simulation models in an experimental setup of a VPP in the laboratory of the University of Luxembourg, implementation and experimental testing of the developed distributed energy management system
Your profile
  • Diploma or Master degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental engineering  or an equivalent degree in engineering;
  • Willingness to inscribe as PhD-student at UL;
  • Basic competence in laboratory and analytical work is necessary;
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in German and English are mandatory.

In the Physics and Materials Research Unit, there are experimental soft matter and solid state physics groups, a theoretical solid state physics group and our group for theory and simulation of soft matter.

The Theory of Soft Condensed Matter group develops computer simulation methods to study rare events and non-equilibrium processes. The PhD topic is located in the field of statistical mechanics of classical systems.

  • Prepare a doctoral thesis in Physics
  • Assist the professor in his teaching activities, one to three hours per week.
  • Develop and apply algorithms to simulate phase transition kinetics in simple model systems.

Scholarship Description: The successful candidate will participate in a newly funded research project in the overlap of Machine Learning and Bioinformatics that focuses on the representation and efficient learning (discovery) of DNA sequence motifs from high-throughput sequence data, such as those obtained by protein binding micro arrays and related technologies. The two key questions that will be addressed are (1) what is an appropriate probabilistic model to capture possible dependencies in motif sequences in a given biological context, and (2) how such a model can be efficiently learned from (large-scale) data. Specific questions that will be addressed involve the computational requirements of learning, the robustness of the learner to model misspecifications, and model generalization issues. The project aims at developing novel theory and algorithms around modern Machine Learning themes such as spectral methods for learning probabilistic mixtures and stochastic controllers for high-dimensional data.
Applicant’s Role: Carry out fundamental research in Machine Learning and Bioinformatics.
Develop new algorithms and make them publicly available.
Publish in top-notch international conferences and journals.
Participate in team meetings, local workshops, and university events.
Assist in the preparation of project reports.

The PhD student will be a member of the Theoretical Solid-State Physics group of the Physics and Material Sciences Research Unit within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication at the University of Luxembourg. He/she will work in an exciting international environment and participate in the development of a young, research-oriented university, established in 2003, that has been successfully expanding in recent years. The group uses first-principles methods to understand and predict the properties of novel functional materials starting from the electronic phenomena at the atomic scale. The work will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Ludger Wirtz in collaboration with experimental and other theoretical groups in Europe.
Your Role
  • Write a thesis in the domain of theoretical solid-state physics;
  • Contribute to research on electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of nanostructured materials (e.g., graphene in interaction with different substrates, semiconducting nanocrystals as light-emitting and light-harvesting materials). This work involves the use and development of both ab-initio and semi-empirical techniques.
