Australia : John Allwright Fellowship for Developing Countries’ Students

John Allwright Fellowship is jointly funded by the (Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research) ACIAR and AusAID. The fellowship supported research projects in the field of agriculture to obtain postgraduate qualifications at Australian tertiary institutions. The fellowship is open to partner-country (ACIAR partner countries) scientists. Interested candidates must submit their applications by 31st July of the year prior to the study taking place.

-be a scientist or economist from the developing country partner, who is actively involved in a collaborative research project supported by ACIAR at the time of application (in some cases, ACIAR will consider supporting researchers from “advanced pipeline” projects, i.e. in cases where a full project proposal has been approved by ACIAR);
-be jointly supported in the application by the Australian and partner country Project Leaders;
-obtain approval from both the employing institution and home government training authority who must agree to the absence of the candidate should he/she receive a Fellowship for the period involved in obtaining the postgraduate qualification; and
-demonstrate that he/she is employed on a permanent rather than short-term contract basis.

Scholarship Description: The ACIAR Fellowships Scheme was introduced in 1986 to provide the opportunity for partner country scientists involved in ACIAR-supported collaborative research projects to obtain postgraduate qualifications at Australian tertiary institutions. ACIAR students are managed by ACIAR and co-funded by ACIAR and AusAID. AusAID assists ACIAR in providing some administrative services in particular partner countries. The primary aim of the Scheme is to enhance research capacity in ACIAR’s partner country institutions. Whilst individual awardees will benefit from the Scheme, it is important to emphasize that partner country institutions are the key targets. Australian project leaders should be aware that, under the eligibility criteria for the Fellowships Scheme, they (or a suitable alternative approved by ACIAR) will be responsible for monitoring the awardees’ academic progress for the duration of his/her study in Australia.
Duration of award(s): An offer of an award is only valid for the Australian academic year following the calendar year in which the offer is made.
What does it cover? An ACIAR Fellowship award usually covers the cost of return airfares, a contribution to living expenses, initial settling in allowance, the fees charged by the tertiary institutions (including an Introductory Academic Program) and miscellaneous course related costs.
Selection Criteria: The Fellow will be selected by the ACIAR Training Committee, according to the following selection criteria:
-The Fellowship is offered to 8-10 individuals annually. Unsuccessful applicants will automatically be reconsidered in the following selection round.
-The applicants must be associated with ACIAR bilateral projects that are either active or completed in the last 24 months.
-The Fellow can be associated with either a NARS or a CGIAR centre (if the applicant is involved in an ACIAR bilateral project), but must be a citizen of an ACIAR partner country.
Notification: All candidates (both successful and unsuccessful), their project leaders, ACIAR Research Program Managers and the post will be advised of the outcome of the selection process as soon as possible after the Training Committee has met, usually within 8 weeks.
How to Apply: Australian and partner country project leaders should jointly identify candidates and forward to ACIAR an application using the current John Allwright Fellowship application form endorsed by the employing organisation and government of the collaborating country. One electronic copy and one hard copy of the application form and all attached documentation must be submitted .post. One hard copy should also be sent to the ACIAR Office in the candidate’s home country if applying from the following countries: Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, India and Western China.

Australia : International Water Leader Scholarships for International Students

USA,Europe,Australia : UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme in Ocean Affairs for Coastal Developing Countries

Brief description:
The UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme is funded by The Nippon Foundation of Japan and implemented by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DAOLOS), with the assistance of the Training and Fellowships Section of the United Nations Division for Economic and Social Affairs.
The main objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and training in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing coastal States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.

Selected Fellows are to carry out specialized research and studies for a 6 month period at one of over 35 host universities or research institutions  in about 16 countries including Australia, France, Barbados, Brazil, USA, Spain, Canada, Ireland, Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, UK, Chile, The Netherlands, and Greece. The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:
Phase One: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study – undertaken at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions and under the guidance of subject matter expert(s) who have recognized in-depth expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.
Phase Two: 3-month Research and Training – normally undertaken at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

• You must be between ages 25 and 40;
• You must have successfully completed a first university degree, and demonstrate a capacity to undertake independent advanced academic research and study;
• You must be a mid-level administrator from a national government organ of a developing coastal State, or another government related agency in such a State, which deals directly with ocean affairs issues, and your professional position must allow you to directly assist your nation in the formulation and/or implementation of policy in this area. This includes marine sciences and the science-policy linkage. Your “Nomination and Recommendation Form” should be completed by a Government official who can attest to the nature of your work with respect to the Government’s ocean affairs and law of the sea related activities, and indicate how an Award would directly contribute to these activities; and
•  Your proposed research and study programme must contribute directly to your nation’s formulation and/or implementation of ocean affairs and law of the sea policies and programmes.

Australia : The University of Western Australia Scholarships for International Students

Brief description:
Applications are invited from suitably qualified international students for scholarships to undertake the degree of Master by Research or Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Western Australia.
The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and the Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF) are funded by The University of Western Australia.

Eligibility:
IPRS and SIRF Scholarships will only be available to those applicants who:
• Have completed a four year undergraduate degree at first-class honours level or equivalent. An applicant may be disadvantaged if the Scholarships Committee cannot make a comparison with The University of Western Australia’s standards, particularly in relation to the class of Honours achieved, ie first or second class Honours;
• Intend to enroll as a full-time candidate for a Master’s degree by research or a PhD degree;
• Will be commencing their course in the semester following the scholarship round in which they have successfully applied;
• Provide evidence of achieving English language proficiency to the following standards:
•  IELTS SCORE OF 6.5, with speaking and listening no less than 6.0 and with reading and writing no less than 6.5;
•  Paper-based TOEFL score of 580 or above (Computer-based TOEFL test is not acceptable) with a Test of Spoken English score of 45 and a TWE (Test of Written English) of 4.5;
• iBT TOEFL internet-based test score of 95 with 22 for reading and listening, 24 for speaking and 23 for writing;
•  Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: C grade;
•  Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: B grade;
•  UWA CELT Bridging Program – ‘B+’ grade or above
All English test results must normally have been obtained within the last two years.

The following applicants will be ineligible for a scholarship under the SIRF scheme:
• International applicants who have already obtained a PhD degree or equivalent.
• International applicants who have already obtained a Master’s degree by research and are applying to undertake another Master’s degree by research.
•  International applicants are not eligible for an IPRS awards if they have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award, unless they can establish that they were unable to apply for an award in the previous calendar year. Students who have already enrolled are eligible for the SIRF awards.
• International applicants who have not provided evidence of their English language proficiency meeting or exceeding the standards listed above and in the application form.
• Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

Australia : Flinders University Scholarships for International Students

Brief description:
Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (FIPRS) are awarded to  suitably qualified applicants to pursue a full-time research higher degree at Flinders University - up to three years for a Research Doctorate degree and up to two years for a Research Masters degree.

The FIPRS pays the international student tuition fees charged by Flinders University for a research higher degree.
In addition, Flinders University provides the recipient with a generous living allowance paid at the rate of $23,728 per annum (2012 rate). It is tax exempt and indexed annually.
An FIPRS student who moves to Adelaide from overseas is eligible for an establishment allowance (after arrival at Flinders) of up to $1,485 to assist with relocation costs and airfares, provided receipts can be produced by the student.

Applicants must be a citizen of any overseas country, except New Zealand, and, satisfy the University’s academic entry requirements for a Masters degree by research or Doctorate by research, including the English proficiency levels set by Flinders University for international students.
Students for whom English is a foreign language will need to provide evidence of their English language competence. Brief description:
La Trobe’s Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) are targeted towards high achieving international students from all countries across all of La Trobe’s undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs.

The scholarships are non-renewable tuition fee awards of A$10,000-$20,000 paid across a maximum period of two semesters (or twelve months). Recipients of the scholarship would be required to pay for any difference in fees for their first two semesters, fees for the remainder of their course and also Overseas Student Health Cover. These scholarships are not renewable and do not cover living costs.
Continuation of the scholarship into a second semester (where relevant) is subject to satisfactory progress and continued enrolment in the program of study for which the scholarship was awarded. Maintaining a C grade average is required, and satisfactory progress will be monitored.

Australia :MUIS Tuition Fee Scholarships in Australia for International Students

Macquarie University International Scholarships (MUIS) are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at the University.

Australia : Sydney Achievers International Scholarships

Brief description:
The Sydney Achievers International Scholarships provides new international students who wants to study in University of Sydney in Australia.  These prestigious scholarships are aimed at attracting high achieving, academically meritorious, international students to enjoy the ‘Sydney experience’ at one of the finest institutions of higher education in the world.

For the postgraduate scholarships, each  scholarship has a value of AUD$10,000 each, available as a one-off award (AUD$10,000 each per annum, (ie, $15,000 in total for a 1.5 year program, $20,000 in total for a 2 year program) for any Postgraduate Coursework program offered at the University of Sydney.
Living allowance is NOT included in the scholarships.

Students who have already commenced tertiary studies, or students transferring with credit exemptions and/or advanced standing are not eligible. Students completing Foundation Studies Programs are also not eligible.

Postgraduate Scholarships
Applicants must have completed the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree qualification with a minimum high distinction average as based on the Australian grading system. Students who have already commenced postgraduate studies, or students transferring from other postgraduate programs are not eligible.

Only applicants with unconditional offers of admission will be considered. No separate application for a scholarship is necessary. An application for admission to the University of Sydney in 2013 will constitute an application for a scholarship. All applications meeting the selection and eligibility criteria will be automatically considered.
The deadline for receipt of applications and complete supporting documentation (academic and English language proficiency results) is 15  January 2013 (for Semester 1, 2013) and 30 June 2013 (for Semester 2, 2013). Applications received after these deadlines will not be considered.

Brief description
Australia Awards Scholarships, formerly known as Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), are scholarships for international students who wants to study in Australian Universities. Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their country.
Australian Development Scholarships are available for vocational education and training courses, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, and PhD degrees at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Scholarship value/inclusions:
ADS are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:
•  Full tuition fees
•  Return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
•  Establishment allowance—a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards as accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
• Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) is a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by AusAID. From 1 January 2013, CLE payable to Scholars studying under an ADS is A$30,000 per year.
•  Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia.
•  Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)—provided to cover the student’s basic medical costs (with the exception of pre existing conditions).
•  Pre-course English (PCE) fees—if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training.
•  Supplementary Academic Support may be available to ensure a Scholar’s academic success or enhance their academic experience.
•  Fieldwork (for research students only)—may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.
Eligibility:
To be eligible to receive a Scholarship, applicants must:
a. be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the Scholarship
b. be a citizen of a participating country (as listed on AusAID’s Scholarship website) and be residing in and applying for the Scholarship from their country of citizenship
c. not be married or engaged to or be a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, at any of the application, selection or mobilisation phases or while on-scholarship in Australia
Note: Residents of Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau with New Zealand citizenship are eligible but must apply for an AusAID 576 student visa.
d. not be current serving military personnel
e. not be applying for another long-term AusAID scholarship unless they have returned to their home country and resided there* for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia (for example, a previous Scholar who has been on AusAID scholarship/s in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another AusAID scholarship until they have been home for eight years)
f. not hold or have held an Australian Government-funded scholarship (e.g. Endeavour Award) in the preceding two years, at the time of application
g. satisfy any specific criteria established by the applicant’s country and/or government of citizenship
h. be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the Scholarship is to be undertaken (this may mean that Post will need to withdraw a Scholarship offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the institution’s admission requirements. This may not be known until Post requests a placement at selected institutions)
i. be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for an AusAID Student Visa 576 (this may mean that Post will need to withdraw a Scholarship offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the visa requirements)
