UK : Durham University Master’s Scholarships in the field of Hazard, Risk and Resilience

Open Society Foundation/Durham University provides application for master’s scholarships in the field of hazard, risk and resilience in UK. Five scholarships are offered and it covers tuition fees at Durham University, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person) and return air travel from the scholar’s home country. University of Sussex offers scholarships for one-year master’s degree students. UK : MRes-PhD Programme in Economics

This new, comprehensive 2+4 MRes/PhD research programme will provide exceptionally high quality training in advanced Economics, giving candidates outstanding opportunities to understand, appreciate, and contribute to frontier research.
After a two-year taught MRes programme, all candidates obtaining excellent results will proceed to the four-year PhD programme.
Several fully funded scholarships will be available for the best candidates.

Programme and admission criteria

The programme is based on advanced courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics in the first year of the MRes, with further two optional courses and an MRes dissertation in the second year. The structure and progression rules will provide the Department, as well as the students themselves, with a greater degree of evidence of candidates’ suitability to progress on to a doctoral programme. The 4-year PhD programme will allow participants to develop as researchers and to make their own mark not only in academia, but also in the public and private sectors, in all fields where excellent research and analysis skills are required.
The programme is based on a two-year taught MRes programme, with three core advanced modules in Macro, Micro and Econometrics (40 CATS each), two optional courses (30 CATS each) and an MRes dissertation (20,000 words – 30 CATS). The students who will achieve the required standards in all these elements will be admitted to the four-year PhD programme and will be able to start their research activities.
Admission criteria for this programme are demanding and the selection process will be highly competitive. Applications close 15th February 2013. We are looking for the brightest students graduating with a First Class Honours degree or equivalent from top institutions. We will also consider applications from Msc graduates with distinction.
All applicants must have taken the GRE General Test no more than five years before applying. We expect most successful MRes/PhD applicants to have scores 800/166 or higher in the quantitative section.
Candidates whose first language is not English must also be able to show a high level of competency in the English Language through their results in one of the approved examinations. For this programme, we require candidates to have achieved a score in Band B, which is equivalent to a Overall IELTS score of 7.0. UK : Postdoctoral Fellowships-Social Policy

The University of Stirling is offering a number of Postdoctoral Fellowships across its Academic Schools. Fellows will be assigned a senior mentor from their host Academic School who has an excellent personal record on research publication and external funding. These 2-year research positions offer the opportunity for outstanding early career researchers embarking upon an independent research career. The Fellowships will provide a fixed-term, research only contract on a salary on the Grade 7 scale (£30,122 - £35,939) and a grant for research expenses of £5,000 per annum.
Candidates will normally hold a doctorate (in exceptional cases, candidates may have submitted their PhD thesis but not yet have undertaken their viva) and will normally have a maximum of six years postdoctoral research experience, whether in a University or industrial setting. The Fellowships are designed to assist Fellows embarking upon an independent research career, with the prospect of transitioning to a lecturing position at the end of the Fellowship (subject to availability of suitable positions and relevant HR processes). During their appointment, Fellows will be expected and supported to secure significant external research funding with which to continue their research programme after the end of their Fellowship. Fellows are expected to:

· undertake research in line with the School's/ Institute&# 39;s and University&# 39;s research strategy.
· develop the skills and attributes required of a full member of the academic staff of the University.
· carry out a programme of innovative research.
Each fellow will be required to plan their research project and execute it, applying for and winning research funding appropriate to the discipline. S/he will train in the skills required to lead research, and to supervise research students, as required by the Head of School.
